It may be October but the days are hot and natural water dries up quickly.
We see the birds so provide for them, but our nocturnal visitors often get forgotten.
Please put a dish of clean water outside the front or back of your house. You will be a lifesaver.
A shallow dish like a flowerpot saucer, a casserole pot lid, or a tapas dish. No deep dog dishes please, they can slip in and drown.
When you're just a little hedgehog with a short neck, and have only drunk out of puddles, it's hard to get the hang of dishes.😊

This toad came in with a wound on his back & leg. As toads absorb moisture through their skin, one of the most commonly used method of treatments is to immerse the patient in a solution containing antibiotics & pain relief. This method is working well & he's already improving.

Some of you lovely kind people who provide food for your garden hedgehogs will have noticed their visits are becoming sporadic lately.
Temperature plays only a tiny part in the hibernation trigger, so even though mild, most healthy full sized hedgehogs have begun the hibernation process now.
So if the food you're providing each night isn't being taken then reduce the amount, but please don't stop. There are lots of hungry babies and sick adults around who aren't able to hibernate, desperately searching for a kind garden. Please be their refuge.

There are lots of late born baby hedgehogs around at the moment.
If they are out at night, that's fine. Please leave them be, out in the wild, and provide what they need - clean water and a dish of dry kitten food each night. There's plenty of time for them to grow and you will be a life saver.
If they are out in the day, they are sick with internal parasites. They may not look sick, but they are ALL in need of professional assessment and life saving treatment, so please take them to a rescue (NOT a vet) immediately. Every hour of delay reduces their chance of survival.
You can't love or feed a sick hedgehog better, and they aren't a DIY project. They are a precious wild animal on the endangered list and they will be in pain. So please do the right thing and get them the help they need.
