🤖 FROM AI TO SI: TRUMP ORDERS A REBRAND

🇺🇸 President Donald Trump has ordered U.S. executive agencies to replace “Artificial Intelligence” with “Super Intelligence,” or “SI,” in official communications and policy documents.

Announced on September 29, the directive reflects the White House’s view that the new name better captures the technology’s expanding capabilities and potential.

📄 The order also calls for a proposed federal definition of “Super Intelligence.”

The change applies to executive branch terminology—it does not establish a global naming standard or demonstrate that today’s AI has achieved superintelligence.

🌐 Washington is changing the label. Whether the wider tech industry follows remains to be seen.

🌍 THE LONGEST WAY HOME: KARL BUSHBY’S 28-YEAR JOURNEY

He left Chile at 29. Nearly 28 years later, he has finally reached Britain.

On November 1, 1998, former British paratrooper Karl Bushby began an extraordinary journey: returning to Hull without using transport to advance his route.

He crossed dangerous jungles, traversed the frozen Bering Strait and swam across the Caspian Sea. Visa restrictions, lost funding and the pandemic turned a planned 12-year expedition into a decades-long commitment.

On October 5, 2026, Bushby reached Dover after swimming the English Channel. Around 400 kilometres still separated him from his mother’s home in Hull.

At 57, he is back in Britain—but his journey ends at her doorstep.

South Africa Anti-Migrant Protests Turn Violent; 24 Vehicles Burned

Police say 24 vehicles were burned in Durban and Soweto as anti-migrant protests escalated, with foreign-owned shops looted.

The unrest followed anger over a Constitutional Court ruling allowing some previously excluded migrants to apply for asylum. Officials stressed that the ruling does not automatically grant refugee status or permanent residency.

Police deployed reinforcements. No casualties had been reported at the time of the BBC report.

CHINA’S CHILDREN ARE CONFIDING IN AI. ARE ADULTS LISTENING?

A 2025 survey of 8,563 students across seven Chinese provinces and municipalities found that 46.4% turned to AI with their worries, while 21.5% said they wanted to chat only with AI, rather than people. These findings describe the surveyed students, not all Chinese children.

China Youth Daily’s reporting points to a gap between talking and listening: conversations about grades can leave children’s emotional needs unanswered, while teachers’ authority can make students reluctant to confide. Research also links parental psychological control with depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents.

A chatbot’s patient responses can feel comforting, but constant agreement can encourage emotional dependence. The deeper challenge is making home and school places where children feel safe enough to speak.

📉 Wall Street Slips as AI Doubts and Rising Oil Hit Sentiment

Wall Street’s technology rally stumbled Thursday. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.25%, while the S&P 500 lost 0.47%. The Dow edged up 0.10%, showing how uneven the selloff was.

AI-related shares came under pressure after the Financial Times reported that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was below the figure previously communicated to investors. The report renewed questions about the growth supporting the AI investment boom. Reuters subsequently reported that differences in revenue accounting helped explain the discrepancy.

Meanwhile, oil prices climbed as Middle East shipping risks and hurricane-related U.S. production cuts raised supply concerns, adding to inflation and interest-rate worries.

The session exposed two pressure points for investors: confidence in AI revenues and the economic cost of expensive energy.

Man Shot by ICE Agents in New York; 5-Year-Old Was in the Car

ICE agents shot and wounded a man in the Bronx on October 8 while carrying out what the Department of Homeland Security called a targeted operation to arrest a Dominican national with a prior conviction. A 5-year-old child was in the car but was believed to be unharmed. DHS said an officer fired and the man was taken to hospital. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated agents surrounded the car before shots were fired. He called the incident “incredibly serious” and said he would urge President Trump to end ICE operations in New York City.

Pentagon Says Fort Hood Shooter’s Execution Will Be Livestreamed

In 2009, Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 32 in a shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. Convicted and sentenced to death in 2013, he is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on December 3, 2026. The Pentagon says the execution will be livestreamed, prompting debate over transparency and the ethics of broadcasting an execution. Hasan may still seek legal review that could delay the execution.

Andrew Wins Challenge Over Unlawful Search Warrants
US documents related to Jeffrey Epstein raised suspicions that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor had shared confidential information during his time as the UK’s trade envoy. He denies wrongdoing. In February, police arrested him on suspicion of misconduct in public office and searched his homes.
Andrew’s lawyers challenged the legality of the warrants. At a High Court hearing, police accepted that the warrants had been issued under the wrong legal provision, and the court ruled them unlawful. The ruling does not end the investigation: police are seeking to retain the seized materials, and that issue will be dealt with separately
