Top executive at Tether, was called "Mago Merlino" (Merlin the Magician) because he used the pseudonym "Merlin"

Why was Giancarlo Devasini called “Merlin”?
The story is more interesting than the nickname suggests.
He was not originally given the name because of Tether’s success. Devasini had already been using “Merlin” as a personal alias long before becoming one of crypto’s most powerful figures.
Before entering crypto, Devasini spent nearly two decades trading computers and electronic components.
During that period, he reportedly used “Merlin” in business communications, together with the Skype username “merlinmagoo.” A colleague was already referring to him as “Mr Merlin” in 2010.
This means that “Merlin” was not initially a crypto nickname.
It was part of Devasini’s online identity before Bitcoin, Bitfinex and Tether transformed his career.
There is no clearly documented explanation for why he originally selected the name.
The alias became publicly significant years later.
In 2018, Bitfinex was struggling to recover hundreds of millions of dollars held by payment processor Crypto Capital.
Messages later revealed through the New York Attorney General’s investigation showed an executive using the name “Merlin.”
That executive was identified as Devasini.
In the messages, “Merlin” repeatedly pressed a Crypto Capital representative known as “Oz” to return the money, warning that the situation could become dangerous for the entire crypto market.
He even suggested Bitcoin could collapse below $1,000.
Once those communications became public, the old alias acquired a new meaning.
Journalists began referring to Devasini as “Merlin the Wizard” or, in Italian, “Mago Merlino.”
The name fitted the image surrounding him: secretive, rarely interviewed and operating behind the scenes of Bitfinex and Tether.
Over time, the nickname became symbolic.
Devasini had helped turn an exchange born in crypto’s early Wild West into one of the industry’s key trading venues—and helped build Tether into critical infrastructure for the global crypto market.
To outsiders, it looked almost like financial alchemy.
But the accurate version is simpler:
Devasini was not called Merlin because people believed he had magically created Tether.
He called himself Merlin first.
Tether’s extraordinary rise and the controversies revealed in court documents made the old alias famous.

Update on fefer:native
Day 15 of me posting about blue dino.
Everyone is tired.
Everyone is frustrated.
Weak hands gave up and sold everything.
And you know what?
I love it.
I haven’t had this much conviction in something for a long time.
Look at what actually happened over the last week instead of staring at the chart:
- Support from @Stable hasn’t disappeared. Could it be stronger? Absolutely. But I believe there’s a bigger plan here.
- Infrastructure is being built. More integrations are coming, and latest posts about @DEXToolsApp and @binance updates is another signals that @Stable is expanding its rails.
- Sell pressure is drying up. Everyone who wanted out had plenty of time to leave. The worst thing during accumulation is impatient traders trapped underwater.
Jeets out. Chads in.
- The @FeferMeme community is getting stronger every single day. The funny dog + $FEFER video from @Andrew__pitcher have already generated 8M+ views combined.
8 MILLION!
And we’re working to create even more content like this.
Now, what do we need next from @Stable and @tether?
- @Uniswap UI support with a direct way to swap into $FEFER
- @fomo app integration
- More top CEXs - @binance, @Bybit_Official supporting deposits and withdrawals through the Stable network
That would remove friction, bring new users and liquidity and open the door for the next wave.
So while everyone is bored, tired and losing conviction…
I’m still here. Still posting. Still pushing. Still bullish.
Patience gets rewarded.
@Stable | 1.3M view | The First memecoin on stable |
It all started here. Don’t make Brian’s mistake. Don’t make Robinhood’s mistake!
$CASHCAT had potential, but they pushed it below $40M before listing it. That wasn’t necessary they killed the positive momentum. They knew they were going to list it, but they didn’t listen to the community. They favored three insiders and rugged the community.
We’re already in a bear market. It’s already a tough environment for everyone. We need positivity and momentum to get things moving again. like the old time.
$FEFER has massive potential. But cooking without touching the stove won’t be the solution for anyone.
Attention ≠ longevity. Making noise on X isn’t enough. Eventually, the community will get tired of memeing without any support. And by “support,” I don’t mean committing crimes. I mean communication. I mean engagement. Not ghosting the community.
We all know Tether doesn’t need any of this it’s already profitable enough. But the community is supporting you!
And if you’re a $FEFER holder, make your voice heard below.
$FEFER is the first meme on the chain! I’m holding!
The chain is still a ghost town, but that all depends on @paoloardoino and @Stable not on the community!
The community is united. We’re not giving up! Ma è giunto il momento di pushare un po’ Paolino! Spacca tutto! Vogliamo andare al prossimo plan-b vestiti da dinosauri 🦖 💪💪💪
I told you i was going to buy ! My thesis is that many of the people who rotated into $CASHCAT could eventually rotate back into $FEFER.
The Robinhood listing is done, and for now I don't expect much more activity especially considering that roughly half of the move came from insiders.
$FEFER still has strong potential. $MERLINO, my coin, supports $FEFER as one of its top 15 holders.
Now all that's left is to wait.
I am one of the biggest holder of $fefer onchain! I’m not going to sell like the others! I’m holding ! $fefer is going to 100M! I’m also $merlino aka Giancarlo!
