I participated as a second key animator for today’s episode of ReZero, I was in charge of 25 cuts. Eternally grateful to everyone at WHITE FOX for letting participate once again. Thank you all for your hard work!

Why are you reducing psychological realism to 1 narrow thing tho? Subaru permanently being mentally unstable becausr of the shit he's gone thru is not the only form of realism a character can have but ill comeback to the other stuff.
We first have to understand tho that his realism comes from other stuff like his insecurity, or his shame, or his inferiority complex, or his self deception, his ego, his avoidance, his dependency, his need for validation, his social awkwardness, his relationship with his parents or the gap between who he is and who he wants to be, or the way those flaws keep resurfacing even after he grows and so on and on and on but even by ur own metric the argument still cannot work because Subaru does NOT just develop positively and become psychologically clean and i honestly don't know why people think this but it's definetely because the anime adapts like 0 narration and inner monologue.
For example, Arc 4 Chapter 54 literally has Subaru convince himself that he should be the one suffering as long as everyone else is okay, which is not exactly what I’d call mentally stable, his trauma is obv actively making his martyr complex worse. Arc 6 Chapter 74 aka "Natsuki Subaru" is one of the clearest chapters for Subaru’s long term self esteem issues tho because even after everything he has accomplished, the chapter still repeatedly emphasizes his self hatred, with Subaru viewing himself as weak and pathetic and fundamentally inadequate and the whole emotional payoff is him finally being able to look at Natsuki Subaru from an outside perspective and admit that this person he normally hates is actually admirable which ONLY works because his self loathing has remained such a persistent part of him, or Arc 7 Chapter 20, after what happens in Guaral, we are told that the suffering had created a mental barrier inside Subaru and that even if he ran somewhere else, the same vigilance and fear would not fade. Arc 7 Chapter 34 again makes his insecurity even more blatant as he distinguishes between having confidence in Natsumi Schwartz, the idealized version of himself and actually having confidence in Natsuki Subaru. Arc 7 Chapter 35, aswell goes right back into his history of running away from expectations and guilt and the way he viewed himself before being summoned. Even in Arc 9 after years of development, the story is still emphasizing how worn down Subaru is and how deep his psychological scars run and how instinctively he takes blame and responsibility onto himself. So where exactly is this perfectly stable Subaru whose development is apparently nothing but clean positive progression? Why do people say shit like this?
And Subaru was never supposed to be the MOST statistically realistic human being ever!!!! conceived anyway. Obv there isn’t some dude on Earth who is as absurdly altruistic as Subaru consistently is. He’s still a heightened fictional character. RBD itself also gives context for why his sense of responsibility becomes so abnormal since he repeatedly experiences situations where he alone remembers failure and knows he potentially has the power to prevent it and anyone with a brain knows that that obviously warps the way he thinks about responsibility and suffering and sacrifice. A realistic character has never meant that every single action has to be the most statistically average reaction a real human would have anyway, especilly not in Fantasy fiction.
