METEOR project partner, MION Technologies, recently participated in the European Ports Alliance Cluster IV workshop. This Public Private Partnership unites key stakeholders to develop solutions for protecting ports from drug trafficking and criminal infiltration.
High dependency on smooth maritime transport drives the need for efficient customs measures. π
But due to the needed balance between controls and facilitation, only a fraction of goods undergo physical inspection. METEOR aims to aid this with an efficient, effective solution.
Efficient and effective customs cargo controls are essential to achieve two key objectives:Β

2οΈβ£ Minimizing disruptions to trade flow
3οΈβ£ Provide a non-intrusive system
METEOR partners joined the CERIS workshop on e-commerce security and illicit transactions in Brussels, gaining insights to enhance our screening and border security solution.
Through the METEOR project, we aim to address these challenges with a novel, easy-to-use vapor-based detection technology, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of screening for the good of society. π
Challenges faced by customs administrations in cargo screening include rising supply chain volumes, diverse threats, reduced manpower, inefficient current methods, and high inspection costs.
The METEOR project participated in the Projects to Policy Seminar in Brussels this week! We were represented by VITO and Futuro Perfecto, where we had the opportunity to present the project and engage in discussions with relevant topics, such as border control.
METEOR aims to create a new technique to complement and in the long run, replace X-Ray screening. Fast, affordable, and non-intrusive inspection technologies are needed to lower physical inspection costs and enhance customs capabilities against illicit goods trafficking.
Did you know that the most commonly implemented technology for bulk screening of cargo containers is X-Ray Imaging (85%)? Other techniques account for the remaining 15%, mainly canine detection (sniffing dogs).
The global inspection is below 5%, mainly due to the lack of efficient technologies which insufficient to prevent illicit goods trafficking. This highlights the need for new, reliable, and affordable large-volume screening technology.
