One of my favorite details from the resurrection is how the Jewish elders immediately created a rumor and paid bribes to enforce the lie that Jesus’ disciples had stolen His body.

What is particularly stupid about their lie is that they had posted guards at the very heavy stone before the tomb. So it wouldn’t even be feasible. But God made easy work of this supposed hurdle by sending angels to scare away or incapacitate the guards and roll the stone away.

Early on it must have been jarring to witness Christ’s ruthless rebukes against the Pharisees. But in the moment of the resurrection, it becomes increasingly clear that they literally did serve the devil. They were not just misguided religious zealots who just couldn’t discern if Jesus really came from the Father. They knew Jesus actually had raised from the dead, and they tried to bury the truth anyway. Because, as the Lord rebuked them, they were of their father the devil.

“And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
