NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS)
12 August 2026
PRESS RELEASE
NANS SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON NYSC DISCLAIMER, CAPITATION DUES AND MISINFORMATION
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has noted the official statement released by the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters (NDHQ), dissociating itself from my viral Facebook publication concerning the intended modus for the collection of NANS Capitation dues directly from students.
At the outset, it is imperative to state that my position is not born out of greed or a desire to burden or overstretch students whom I proudly represent. My Facebook post, which was later published by Punch NG, was made within the purview and provisions of the NANS Constitution.
To be clear, every student pays Student Union dues in their respective campuses without raising eyebrows. NANS, as the apex student body with a wider range, more demanding and more enormous responsibilities, has the constitutional mandate to collect Capitation dues from students for its operational efficiency.
Going forward, it is imperative to set the record straight: at no time has NANS announced any partnership with the NYSC for the collection of Capitation dues. The impression created by the publication was a result of misinformation arising from the publication by Punch NG of a random Facebook discussion.
NANS is an organisation that can propose partnerships to any government agency or institution. It is, however, left for the agency or institution to either accept or reject such a proposal. For the avoidance of doubt, NANS has never approached the NYSC for any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), collaboration or partnership over the collection of its Capitation dues.
This clarification becomes necessary so that everyone can be properly guided and not misled by false narratives or misleading interpretations of an informal discussion.
When the time is right, and after the NANS National Headquarters must have put all adequate measures in place, we will officially meet and make public the agency or agencies with which we will partner for the collection of the Capitation dues.
Until then, members of the public, Nigerian students and all relevant stakeholders are urged to disregard any narrative suggesting that NANS has entered into an agreement, partnership or collaboration with the NYSC for the collection of Capitation dues from students.
NANS remains committed to transparency, quality representation and the protection of the interests of Nigerian students.
Signed:
Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, GCNS
President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)
