@FRB_KBS acquired this double-sided work by Peter Paul Rubens, dating to Sept. 1607 when Rubens was in Italy, features both a drawing and handwritten letter. Find it on display at Rubenshuis Antwerp, where it is on long term loan. @TEFAF

Phillis Wheatley broke historic barriers as the first African American and first enslaved person to publish a book of poetry....

Slave traders purchased Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784) at age eight from West Africa and brought her to America, where the Wheatley family of Boston purchased her.

She did not perhaps have the typical life of an enslaved woman in 18th century America, however. The family soon recognized that Phillis has a talent for writing and two of the Wheatley's children tutored her in English, Latin, history, geography, and religion. This must have been a quick realization, as Phillis could read difficult Greek and Latin classics by age 12. She later published a book of poetry which earned her international acclaim, even from the likes of George Washington and Voltaire.

Unfortunately, she did have to defend her ability to write poetry in court in 1772. Some colonists did not believe that an African slave could write with such talent. A group of educated Bostonian's examined her work and signed an attestation confirming that she was indeed the author. This was included in the preface of her book which was published in London in 1773 - Publishers in Boston had declined to publish it.

@kmgovier It's complicated, for #womenartists - For many, being part of an artist couple made their own work possible, made them famous, got them through doors they'd never gone through alone. For others it was a recipe for being overlooked.
Same in science, literature, music, politics...
