Today, we often go ‘live’ to beam ongoing events to our chosen audience anywhere. About a century ago, radio did that work (without visuals). Over 2,000 years ago, a ‘herald’ - a male human who carried information across on foot - did that work. That’s exactly where the ‘A-Thon’ terminology of the Guinness Book of Records comes in. ‘A-Thon’, as we know, is a variant of marathon. Marathon is often used to describe a lasting session of an activity - a marathon meeting, a singing marathon, a cooking marathon, etc. However, “marathon”, itself, is the name of an ancient Greek town - Marathon. How did the town become known for long distance running in the first place?
In the first week of September 490 BC, the Persian King Darius I launched his first (in a series of) attack on Greece. The arena for that war was the town of Marathon. 11,000 Greek soldiers (mainly Athenians) would face off with 600,000 Persians. Darius had subjugated every people on his way from the east. Greece stood no chance. Pheidippides was the Athenian herald. He had made a run from Athens to Sparta and back to deliver a request for military support (which was refused). On his arrival on September 10, Athenian troops had managed to chase Darius’ men back into their vessels. By his job description, Pheidippides had to immediately get the good news across from Marathon to the city of Athens. Upon arrival in Athens, he is recorded to have uttered these words before passing out and dying instantly - ‘nikomen’ (“we win!"). In all, Pheidippides made in excess of 240 km in two days. This is the basis of the marathon race (and, now, things-a-thon).

When we talk about healing, it's not just about mending a broken heart from a love gone wrong. Life's got a whole lot more going on. People are out there healing from things that hit even closer to home.
Like, dealing with parents who might have been anything but supportive. That kind of stuff cuts deep. You grow up expecting these folks to be your rock, and when they're not, it leaves a mark. And then there's the whole friendship betrayal thing. It's brutal. You trust these people, build memories with them, and then boom, they turn their backs on you. That's a whole different kind of hurt.
Siblings, too, can stir up some real emotional chaos!! It's not just petty childhood fights; sometimes these feuds run deep and leave lasting scars. And don't even get me started on school or work stress. It's like your whole sense of worth and identity gets caught up in this grind, and before you know it, you're lost in it.
Remember healing is way more than just getting over a romantic relationship. It's about piecing yourself back together from all these different kinds of setbacks and hurts you face in life. Everyone's got their own battle, and often, it's got nothing to do with their love lives. Healing's this personal journey that touches on every part of who you are and what you've been through!!
