At the same time, however, Republicans as a party basically ran their campaign operation across the country last year pretty much focused on trans people and got spanked.
To be clear, I have never once advocated for Democrats moving away from advocating for protections for trans people — but *what* protections you choose to fight for and *how* you fight for it is a really important topic when public opinion is that heavily slanted.
If you want to argue on *sports*, then that is a losing fight — end of story. It is not just clear in our poll; it is visible in data from the New York Times and backed up by other polls on other LGBT topics. It's even something that a lot of LGBT organizations have said themselves. It also impacts a minimal group.
Regarding the ineffective methods (of confrontation) that I cited in our piece, that actually came directly from the New York Times talking to the executive director of Advocates for Transgender Equality.
Or take this quote, from Sarah McBride talking to Ezra Klein: "Right now, that compromise would be deemed unprincipled, weak, and throwing everyone under the bus, and that is so counterproductive, it is so harmful and it completely betrays the lessons of every single social movement and civil rights movement in our country’s history."
You decide. But it is not anti-trans to do a poll (reviewed by a bipartisan board of experts to protect against bias!). It is not anti-trans to point out that the movement has lost a lot of ground over the last ten years. And it is not anti-trans to say that the strategies chosen haven't worked in the face of Republican attacks.
And there still exists broad support for protecting transgender individuals from discrimination in employment and housing — so there is a framework to focus on. But the choice has to be made.
And dismissing people who say that as "transphobic" is wrong, counterproductive, and a one-way ticket to losing.
Not to mention the potential safeguarding issues that go with it as if these were to pass any c!s man who intends to cause harm could just say their trans and be able to access women's spaces.
Just as sentiment changed in North Carolina quickly, if all of these things did happen, there would be a quick backlash by women as these bills would require fully presenting men who have been on testosterone to share bathrooms with them and play on their sports teams.
The trans rights backlash is extremely real and very worrying for progressives.
The public is aligned with conservatives on several issues like sports, restrooms, and minors' access to care. It's possibly the worst issue for progressives I've ever polled.

Violence tied to #ICE in Minnesota and the ongoing case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia here in Maryland are part of the same story: fear.
From #Minneapolis to #Hyattsville, federal enforcement is reshaping how safe our neighbors feel.
