On June 28, 1998, #Boston's #IrishFamineMemorial was unveiled in Downtown Crossing , commemorating the 150th anniversary of #ireland's Great Hunger, which killed 1 million #Irish + forced nearly 2 million to flee Ireland. Thousands of Irish immigrants came to Boston, changing the city forever. Today the memorial is part of Boston's #Irishheritagetrail. https://t.co/1yYA5bnxRG #meetboston @dtownboston@RevSpaces@rian_center@IPCBoston@bostoncatholic@TheBostonPilot
A quiet corner of Forest Park shelters an eternal flame in memory of the Massachusetts-born President John F. Kennedy who fell by an assassin’s bullet in 1963. We patterned this memorial after that established in Arlington Cemetery by JFK’s widow, Jacqueline.
Artist Lambert Hollis, an Irish immigrant living in #Boston, captured an iconic #civilwar scene on April 3, 1865, when Abraham Lincoln appeared in #Richmond VA, days after Confederate forces evacuated the city. Hollis, a sketch artist with the journalist pool, depicted Lincoln + his young son surrounded by jubliant Blacks. Lincoln was assassinated 11 days later. Hollis returned to Boston, painted Catholic Church murals + designed greeting cards. In old age, he became destitute + died at a poor farm in #WakefieldMA on February 10, 1923.

On Oct 25, 1848, Boston received a new source of drinking water from Lake Cochituate, 14 miles away. It replaced Jamaica Pond Reservoir, which had supplied water to the city since 1795. Today #MWRA supplies water to 61 cities & towns. @MWRA_update@MWRAAdvisory@BOSTON_WATER
