I had a similar experience protesting budget cuts where white people endlessly handwrung and vetoed every proposal over racism and ableism, but settled on a “mock indigenous funeral for cut funding” as the best proposal. I was the only remotely indigenous person in that room.

The mask mandatory lesbian bar story and its 4 hour zoom struggle session reminded me that in my first foray into campus activism the YDSA kids organized a “coalition planning meeting” for a protest and some liberals from Amnesty International quite literally took the stage and told us it was not our place to lead “their” protest and, in this order:

- Vetoed a march because it was not wheelchair accessible (?)
- Vetoed a sit-in because it was also not disability friendly due to being an enclosed cramped space
- Vetoed a picket line because if black and brown students were on a picket line then it would make them targets for the police and if white students formed the picket line it would be centering white people
- Banned an artist who drew protest art/flyers because they “depicted brown suffering”

The meeting lasted probably 5 hours with frequent interruptions to make people leave the room and come back in when they had written an apology for whatever transgression they committed. Almost everyone dropped out and everyone just had to do their own thing if they wanted to protest.

I honestly wouldn’t blame you if you thought I was making this up but if you have spent any amount of time organizing you have experienced some variation of this problem and the only way to deal with it is to exclude these people from any kind of decision making immediately. They are pathological narcissists and obsessed with turning their activism into a career. You cannot try to people-please them into cooperating. Ignore them and anyone who listens to them.
