@TyleKurner On eBay a few months ago I saw a 35mm print of TPM for sale, including this screen grab the reveals what I never thought about before: THE PHANTOM MENACE was at least partially *edited* on film!!
@GemOfAmara I’m with you on the substance, but my 4yo and I are watching the old Transformers show & I laughed SO HARD during in pilot at the lower third “FOUR MILLION YEARS LATER”.“‘TRANSFORMERS ONE’ takes place 3 billion years before the live-action movies.” has the same ludicrous ring! 😂
@DeusExCinema but their chief sin was not being what fans wanted/expected. The Disney stuff has thrived by trying to be exactly what fans want, but fail (in the case of the film trilogy) by being incoherent as a unity. That doesn't feel ripe for reassessment to me!
@DeusExCinema But to the original question -- undoubtedly many folks who grow up with the Disney trilogy will not have the antipathy toward it that a lot of adults do today. But I don't think they can ever have the critical reanalysis that the prequels have had. The prequels have problems, ...
@TyleKurner The pilot of KIM’S CONVENIENCE? It’s 4 years since I saw it, but I liked it a lot, and I love the idea of adapting a play into the first episode of a TV show.
@TyleKurner I recently took my kid to WALL-E at Metrograph, and it was great but the print had tons of horizontal scratches and it made me think how there’s no inherent virtue in a 35mm print of a computer animated movie from 2008. A DCP woulda looked better. (But we still had a lotta fun!)
@DeusExCinema YES! Sometimes K and I have to avoid laughing during movies, because O wants to understand every single joke, even if it's impossible to explain to him. But he learns so much from them, and amazingly still finds them extremely funny.
@DeusExCinema He also adores the Lego Batman Movie, but in both cases it’s funny watching them with a little kid because he views them more as awesome than funny (though he does laugh his ass off at the funny parts), and a big part of it for him is wanting to get all the things in the movie!
@DeusExCinema Hahaha, actually we had to stop halfway because it was bedtime (there had been a few unanticipated pauses), and he’s often hard to steer back to watch the second part of something once he’s stopped, but he LOVED the first half.
@DeusExCinema Maybe anniversarymania has peaked? I’ve been amazed at the anniversaries people have fussed over the last few years that in the past I’d’ve gotten sideways looks for observing, and maybe it’s just back to normal now.
@DeusExCinema Oliver and I incidentally watched it a couple of weeks ago and I realized then decennial was coming up, but yeah, this is the first acknowledgment I have heard outside of my own brain!
@DeusExCinema Do you know about Cadbury Mini Snowballs? I just found out this year, but they’re Christmas ornament-shaped (round) mini eggs in green, red, and white.
