This is unbelievable.

In June, the Energy Secretary told a congressional committee: “We did not involve politics in the decision-making of our review process. Hands down.”

Last week, his own department’s lawyers told a federal court the opposite.

The numbers:

DOE flagged more than 600 grants for possible termination. They were spread across red states and blue states alike.

The White House budget office canceled 284 of them.

283 were in states that voted for Kamala Harris.
Roughly 340 comparable grants in Trump-voting states were left in place.

In a July filing, DOE’s attorney conceded the terminations were not based on “any programmatic, statutory, cost-reduction or performance-based factor.” The stated criterion was the political identity of the recipient’s state.
Not merit. Not performance. Not cost. The geography of the vote.

I’m an economist. I study incentives for a living, and here is the incentive this creates: if the federal government funds your work, your survival now depends on your ZIP code’s voting record.

A federal judge has already ruled this unconstitutional – twice – as a violation of equal protection.

Today it’s clean energy. But the logic doesn’t stay in one sector. Once “did your state vote for us” becomes an allocation rule, it works just as well for cancer trials, agricultural research, defense labs, and any university whose findings prove inconvenient.

I don’t care whether a lab sits in California, Texas, Florida, or Ohio. American science should compete on evidence and excellence. That standard built eighty years of American scientific dominance, and it’s worth more than any administration’s grievances.

This isn’t fiscal responsibility. It’s political retaliation.
