Is it just me or are $RKLB Rocketlab premiums on covered calls pretty incredible right now?
A covered call needs 100 shares to sell, let's assume we buy 1000 shares at spot price $11.42 for $RKLB to sell 10 contracts.
Total cost = $11,420
When you sell a covered call, essentially you are agreeing to sell someone the right to control the 100 shares you bought for a premium paid up front.
That premium is yours to keep and you get to keep your 100 shares of the stock if it does not go above the strike price that you sold the covered call at which is the same strike price that the buyer bought the call at.
This allows you to use those 100 shares to generate income on a weekly/monthly basis and if the stock does go above the strike, you get to sell those shares at that price (capturing the difference) along with keeping the premium.
If we go 27 days out...
- $12 CC yields a 8.3% return
- $12.5 CC yields a 7% return
- $13 CC yields a 5.6% return
- $13.5 CC yields a 4.8% return
- $14 CC yields a 3.5% return
- $14.5 CC yields a 3.9% return
- $15 CC yields a 3% return
- $16 CC yields a 2.2% return
If one didn't care about their shares getting called away & didn't expect a major run up on the stock given it already is up 80%+ (Rocketlab might have much more room to run but this is just coming from someone who may want to wheel it without caring about if it gets called away) then it seems like the returns are not too bad.
Obviously the risks are if $RKLB falls from this $11.42 range which means you would be down on the actual shares and if the call buyers disappear if the stock sees a serious pullback.
I was just surprised at how strong the premiums are and how much people are willing to pay for these calls on $RKLB right now...
