The comforting myth that humans will simply “fix the robots” collapses under scrutiny: if machines can build skyscrapers, they will eventually maintain themselves—eliminating even those roles.

In the U.S., this transition is unfolding through a lens of fear, with resource access increasingly politicized, racialized, and hoarded by a shrinking elite.

Maintaining such a system demands more coercion and surveillance, pushing us toward authoritarianism and a permanent hierarchy—potentially reinforced by life-extending technologies reserved for the powerful.

But we could instead build a post-scarcity civilization: one grounded in universal basic income, healthcare, education, and dignity, where identity is no longer tied to labor but to creativity, community, and meaning.

The choice is ours—do we let machines serve human flourishing, or allow them to become tools of oppression in the hands of the immortal elite?
