Today is 37 years since the Tiananmen Massacre

On this day in 1989, the Chinese Communist Party ordered the People's Liberation Army to open fire on its own citizens.

Peaceful pro-democracy students and workers who gathered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square demanding freedom, anti-corruption, and basic human rights were crushed under tanks and gunfire.

The protests began in mid-April 1989, triggered by the death of reformist leader Hu Yaobang. On May 13, students began a hunger strike. Martial law was declared on May 20, but protesters remained peaceful.

In the early hours of June 4, troops advanced with tanks and live ammunition. Soldiers fired on unarmed civilians blocking their path in the streets surrounding the square.

Hundreds to thousands were killed. Thousands more were imprisoned, tortured, or disappeared.

To this day, the Chinese government censors all mention of it, erases it from history books, and threatens anyone who remembers.

Islamification of Florida: Planned Islamic Center Osceola County Lake Nona Medical City!

In the heart of Florida’s rapidly expanding Lake Nona Medical City corridor in Osceola County, a modest converted single-family home at 5800 Cyrils Drive is set to be demolished to make way for a sprawling 35,100-square-foot Islamic complex that signals the accelerating transformation of Central Florida’s cultural and religious landscape.

The Nona Muslim Community Association (NMCA), operating as Lake Nona Masjid, filed detailed site development plans with Osceola County in early 2025 through civil engineering firm KPM Franklin.

The project calls for razing the existing roughly 1,800-square-foot structure, purchased by the group in 2022 for $750,000, and erecting a massive multi-purpose facility on 4.3 acres zoned for low-density residential use, where houses of worship are permitted up to a 50-foot height limit.

Phase One focuses on a 15,000-square-foot mosque and prayer hall complete with classrooms, while future phases include an 11,300-square-foot gymnasium and an 8,800-square-foot daycare center, along with surface parking and an outdoor play area.

Crowdfunding is actively underway on the group’s website, with tax-deductible donations solicited under the banner of building a “legacy for generations” and earning eternal reward in Jannah.

The organization behind this ambitious expansion is the Nona Muslim Community Association, Inc., a Florida nonprofit incorporated in March 2019.

Public records identify Dr. Sadiq Shaik (also listed as Sadiq Shaikh) as the principal officer, registered agent.

Dr. Shaik, a pediatric anesthesiologist affiliated with Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, leads what appears to be a grassroots Muslim community effort targeting the booming Lake Nona and St. Cloud areas.

The group’s mission, as stated on its website, is “to connect American Muslim families, share Islamic beliefs and values, and serve others” while envisioning “a better world where Islamic values empower better lives for all.”

Programs already include a Sunday school (Guiding Light Institute) with Quran studies, Arabic, sports, and STEM for over 60 children; youth groups; seniors club; and community iftars and events.

Funding for the project is framed as purely community-based crowdfunding, with repeated appeals invoking hadiths about building mosques and earning a house in paradise.

The 501(c)(3) status allows tax-deductible contributions via platforms like GiveLively and CharityStack, and the group has raised initial capital sufficient to acquire the Cyrils Drive property outright. However, detailed donor lists, major benefactors, or audited financials beyond basic IRS Form 990 availability are not prominently disclosed on the public website or GuideStar profile.

The broader pattern of U.S. mosque development, particularly in high-growth Sunbelt states like Florida, has long drawn scrutiny from national security analysts because many early American Islamic institutions were seeded or influenced by MB-linked networks in the 1960s–1990s through groups like the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT) and the Muslim Students Association.

While no such publicly disclosed linkage surfaces here, the project’s rapid scaling in a strategically located, demographically shifting suburb fits the documented strategy of incremental “Islamization” through da’wah infrastructure, youth education, and multi-use community centers that serve as hubs for both religious practice and cultural influence.

Critics of unchecked Islamic expansion in Florida view the Lake Nona Masjid project as emblematic of a larger demographic and ideological shift.
