🧵on #bullying
"We may think bullying is childish behaviour left behind on finishing school, or that universities and colleges are too cultured or intellectual for such behaviour."
But in fact, bullies *flourish* in academia.

Our students got to collect eDNA around the blue whales that were hanging around in front of Scripps! Excited to see the results, @eDNAcollab @calcofi@Rovingdiver2
🐋When #BlueWhales were recently spotted off of San Diego, Scripps Oceanography PhD candidate and @Scripps_MBARC member Michaela Alksne saw more than the fascinating cetaceans; she saw an opportunity to leap into cutting-edge, noninvasive marine research. 🧵⬇️

As a PI, I’ve worked to ban the word “easy” from my vocabulary when talking about research.
Nothing is easy, and the longer we’re out of the lab, the more we tend to forget this.

In an unconscionable move by the UC, University of California Police arrested 3 workers on felony charges and confiscated their possessions for writing messages in chalk and washable paint calling on UC to stop underpaying workers.🧵
@jogleeson_ucsd I’ll have to check my lab as well. Curious if this is human subject approved and if all participants of the study have signed the form stating they will participate and if it explained how their human subject data will be used? @UCSanDiego

Good news: Because of our actions and commitments, projected global warming in 2100 is only about half of what was expected just a few years ago.
Bad news: The impacts even at lower temperatures are far worse than what was expected.
@academic_exit It takes time and this is really difficult mentally. Therapy helps going through the steps but when you have decided to leave things start to feel better.
@academic_exit Find allies that will help you to safely leave this situation. The higher up the better. Seek opportunities around so you can easily transition to better environment. Bring others with you, you are probably not the only one bullied, several make a stronger case to find support.
