I met @madebyoona in July last year, in Paris.

I met the artist a few months later at @glitchresidency.

She performed Look Touch Own in a 400 year old pigeon coop at a chateau in the French countryside. The work— what drives it & what it reveals— runs deep for me, as a woman growing & sorting through this radical chaos of life.

So here’s a thing about Twitter….

It’s meant to be our platform to express ideas. We utilize it thinking of free speech and independent thinking. We all want to be able to share, listen, and be heard here. It’s meant to be an avenue for artists to reach audiences and vice versa.

But if you - like OONA - make art about gender and sexuality and use the body…. Your ideas are suppressed.

It’s a method of power = posit equal accessibility by all and silently suppress individuals.

This goes back to Foucault and can be seen play out in most regimes that try to maintain dominance: instead of controlling the price, control the volume.

Ie: if everyone can recognize the rise of price of bread, then there will be collective outrage. If you change the volume of bread, it breads competition amongst individuals.

Twitter does not and will not change the price of bread - I pay the same and still my account is shadowbanned. As is any artist whose work is focused on ideas that the algorithm (not the individuals) does not merit.

The rhythm throughout my tweets is always the same: hot take later balanced by gratitude tweet, successes minimized by following thot pics so algo keeps me basic. Then the real idea. A basic flux that leans heavily on inbred algorithmic objectification to pierce my ideas through to you.

remember that this is not a platform built on freedom of thought. Everytime you look at your timeline, you are being force fed.
