When Jacob Zuma said he did not want to testify before the Zondo Commission because he believed there would be bias, he was criticised. He said he was willing to appear before a commission, but wanted to give his testimony before a different judge.

The response from some was: “Zuma is just delaying the process.”

Now, when @CyrilRamaphosa says he does not want to testify before Evidence Leader Advocate Thandazani Madonsela SC because he believes the process may not be fair, some people defend him by saying he is exercising his rights.

The question is simple: should the same principles of fairness and due process not apply to everyone, regardless of political affiliation?

Accountability must be consistent. If one person’s concerns are dismissed as “delay tactics,” while another person’s concerns are accepted as a legitimate exercise of rights, then we must ask ourselves whether we are applying the same standard to everyone.

Are we being fair, or are we judging situations based on who is involved?
