Nowadays people might think this video is AI but apparently this pelican really existed in the past and his lifestyle made him a cherished national icon in Japan. His life also inspired a feature length Japanese animated film.

The name of this pelican is Katta-kun, a hand reared roseate pelican from Tokiwa Park in Ube, Japan, flying into and playfully interacting with children at a nearby private kindergarten.

He was born in 1985 via Japan's first artificial incubation, the unusually tame pelican regularly visited the kindergarten about 800 metres from the park, becoming a national news sensation for its friendly behaviour with the children. Instead of flying away or avoiding the noise, he chose to land directly in the schoolyard. The zookeepers quickly realized that Katta-kun wasn't causing trouble or trying to escape, he simply wanted to socialize. Trusting his calm nature, they granted him full freedom to fly across the city as he pleased.

He routinely waddled right through the school hallways alongside students. During singing time, he would quietly settle himself right next to the piano, listening to the teacher play and hanging out while the children sang songs like Mix Juice.

Katta-kun received an animal welfare award, inspired a 1995 anime film titled Katta-kun Monogatari (The Story of Katta-kun), and remained a local mascot with a statue at the park following his death in 2008 at age 23.
