Why You Cannot Change Someoneโs Personality
I continue to be puzzled by how many people believe they can change someoneโs personality, whether at work or in marriage. Personality is not something you can switch on and off. It is an enduring pattern of thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that makes each of us who we are. Psychologists have long established that personality is largely hereditary and shaped in early childhood. By adulthood, it becomes relatively stable and resistant to change.
Think about the people around you, your workmates, friends, and family members. Have you noticed anyone who has truly changed their personality? Probably not. Adults may moderate their behaviour in certain situations, perhaps to fit in or to please others, but it is usually temporary. Given the chance, people quickly revert to their natural selves. That is why I often say, do not focus too much on what people say, watch what they consistently do. Over time, patterns of behaviour reveal who a person truly is.
Try this simple test. Take a pen and write your signature. Now, use your other hand to write the same signature. You will feel immediate discomfort; it feels awkward and unnatural. That is what trying to change someoneโs personality is like. You are asking them to feel that discomfort every single day. Eventually, they will tire of it and return to their natural way of being.
This is why it is almost impossible to change someoneโs personality. Marriages suffer when partners convince themselves that love will transform the other person. Teams fail when leaders and consultants assume they can fix peopleโs personalities through training or motivation. Toxic workplaces exist because people with deep seated personality issues are hired or tolerated for too long.
The truth is, there is no such thing as a perfect personality. We all have our flaws and blind spots. The real skill lies in learning to work and live with those imperfections, yours and others. But be wise, if you cannot manage someoneโs personality and their behaviour consistently brings more harm than value, do not keep them close, whether in your personal life or in your team.
Many people feel betrayed when someone they trusted says the right things but acts differently. That is cognitive dissonance at work, a psychological discomfort when behaviour conflicts with inner truth. The mind always seeks relief from that tension by returning to its natural state. That is why, in the end, people always go back to who they really are.

Pay your way up. Free things come with a lot of disrespect. Whatever you get for "free", has a price to it. In one way or another, you are paying, or you will pay for it.
