Addis Ababa’s Riverside Development is far more than a riverbank beautification project. From the Entoto to Peacock corridor to the Entoto–Kebena stretch, this is a large-scale urban transformation that extends up to 50 meters beyond the rivers, creating green corridors, public gathering spaces, walkable areas, recreation zones, and commercial spaces that are reshaping the city itself.

What makes the project especially significant is its broader economic and social impact. Beyond improving the appearance and function of the riversides, it has created jobs for many people across construction, engineering, landscaping, logistics, and related sectors, while also generating opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, and businesses. The fact that so much of the work is being designed and delivered locally highlights the growing capacity of Ethiopian expertise in urban development and infrastructure.

The sustainability aspect is equally important. Once dumping grounds for toxic waste and flood hazards affecting communities along the riverbanks, these areas are now being transformed into greener, healthier, and more liveable urban spaces. At the same time, the integration of commercial and public spaces demonstrates how environmental restoration and economic growth can work together rather than compete with one another.

This is a long-term investment in the future of Addis Ababa as a greener, more connected, economically vibrant, and people-centered city.

This morning, following yesterday’s 7th General Election, we officially opened the transformative Entoto to Kechene Medhanealem Riverside Development Project.

This landmark initiative has revitalized the heart of our capital, transforming once-degraded landscapes into vibrant green spaces through advanced soil conservation, river purification, and fruit parks seamlessly integrated with pedestrian and cycling trails.

Spanning a total riverside development corridor of 22.25 kilometers, the project stands as a tangible symbol of our progress and a practical demonstration of national growth, environmental restoration, and urban renewal.

The people of Ethiopia are an extraordinary and remarkable people. Other than the Creator, who can truly know and assess our people in their entirety? Through this year’s election, Ethiopians have once again shown the world that they are a people with a rich culture, deep patriotism, and the ability to safeguard the common good.

On this historic day:

* Citizens who were not intimidated by the cold and darkness of the night,
* Who were not deterred by the midday sun or sudden rain,
* Whom weddings, funerals, childbirth, and other social obligations did not prevent from participating,
* Who were not wearied by long lines,
* Whose physical disabilities did not stop them from casting their vote,
* Those whose illness and old age did not prevent from witnessing the hope of their country,
* Who were not exhausted by carrying their infant children; the future inheritors of the nation,
* And above all, whom the shouting and threats of enemies could not intimidate or stop;

The perseverance you demonstrated amid many challenges and hardships, against all odds, was a contribution made for democracy and for the very survival of the nation. For this, you deserve heartfelt gratitude.

It is a privilege to serve such a people. Therefore, may those who have been elected honor the trust placed in them and serve this people, with integrity and sincerity! A people who have paid a great price for the democratic system. May you be worthy of that responsibility.

We inaugurated the Borana Cultural Center today in Yabelo town. The foundation stone for the center was laid in 2020 (2013 Ethiopian Calendar) by First Lady Zinash Tayachew, and it has now officially opened for service. Built using proceeds from the sale of the book Medemer, the center sits on 57.6 hectares of land.

The center was specially designed to showcase the Gadaa system. It features a conference hall with the capacity to accommodate up to 2,000 people at a time, as well as a heritage museum and is expected to play a key role in preserving and passing on the culture, history, and philosophy of the Borana people to future generations.

This pristine conservation area is a massive sanctuary for wildlife and tourism, serving as a vital home to various mammal species, bird varieties, and diverse plant types.

Securing water infrastructure remains a key milestone in building resilience, marked by the completion of irrigation dams under the Finna Oromia Irrigation Projects in Gomole Woreda of Borena Zone. In Dese Gora, for example, this critical infrastructure has created a massive water storage capacity of more than 190 million cubic meters, ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply. The projects have the potential to irrigate over 14,500 hectares of agricultural land, directly supporting households, strengthening food production, and securing water resources for livestock.

The agricultural transformation unfolding in East Borana Zone is a powerful testament to Ethiopia’s journey toward food self-sufficiency!  In this season alone, our hardworking farmers have covered over 176,223 hectares of land, anticipating a massive yield of more than 3.1 million quintals of crops. Through organized cluster farming mobilizing over 101,000 households and utilizing modern tractors, we are turning potential into productivity.  From the vast wheat clusters in Liben District to major harvests of teff, maize, and haricot beans, we are securing our domestic food supply.
