Jobs, as we currently understand them, are a recent invention. Wage labor, employment contracts, defined hours, careers, the 9-to-5, the resume: all industrial-era constructs, barely two centuries old. Before that, most humans were hunter-gatherers, subsistence farmers, artisans, or household producers. People lived for hundreds of thousands of years without employment, wages, careers, or the modern distinction between work and life.

There is no deep reason to believe employment is an essential feature of human life. It is what we are used to, and humans fear change.

Employment was a phase. AI will end it. The only question is when.

The recent report by Lebanese MTV, in which Hezbollah allegedly arrested a Lebanese Army soldier for intercepting a weapons truck coming from Syria, only to release him after negotiations with the Army, captures in one scene the entire Lebanese paradox, a state that exists in name, and a country that functions through parallel powers.

No arrests. No confiscations. No accountability. Just negotiations between a militia and the national army, as if both were equal sovereign entities. This is not a security incident; it is a constitutional collapse.

Lebanon is small in territory and population, but dangerous in structure. It concentrates all the elements of chronic instability, armed non-state actors, narco-state patterns, sectarian power-sharing, external patrons, economic collapse, and a fragmented national identity. It is not only a failed state; it is also a divided state by design.

The core problem is not corruption or poverty, but the absence of a unified political community. Lebanon is not one society with differences; it is several societies sharing the same geography. Christians, Muslims and Shiites etc. do not disagree on policies, they disagree on the very meaning of the state, sovereignty, war, peace, and foreign alliances.

This raises the fundamental question, can Lebanon still be stabilized within its current form?

The Yugoslav and Cypriot models suggest that forced unity in deeply divided societies often leads either to violent fragmentation (Yugoslavia) or frozen partition (Cyprus). Both models imply a hard truth, when national identity collapses, territorial or political reconfiguration becomes inevitable.

An alternative path would be economic integration into a larger functional space, the European Union model, or a regional economic bloc involving Turkey, Israel, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Such integration would not solve identity conflicts, but it could neutralize them by shifting loyalty from sectarian politics to economic interests and institutional rules.

In other words, Lebanon may no longer be salvageable as a sovereign ideological project, but it could still survive as a node inside a larger system.

The real danger is not that Lebanon will explode.
The real danger is that it will continue like this, a country where no one governs, no one obeys, and everyone negotiates with weapons.
