The English word "window" has Nordic origins. In the Old Norse era, homeowners added small ventilation holes in the top of the walls and the roof. They called them vindauga (literally translated as windeye). When the British adopted this practice, these holes became windows.
Until the 1700s, glass windows were luxury home additions that rich people included only in the house's most important rooms. Windows were such prized possessions that aristocrats would disassemble and store them when they were away from home.
