“MASASABI MO BA NA ANG ATING SUNDALO NA NAGSASAKRIPISYO [SA WEST PHILIPPINE SEA] AY ‘TROUBLEMAKER’?”
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on Wednesday defended Filipino troops asserting the country’s maritime rights in the West Philippine Sea, rejecting Vice President Sara Duterte’s characterization of the Philippines as a “troublemaker” in Southeast Asia.
“Masasabi mo ba ang ating sundalo na nagsasakripisyo diyan ay troublemaker na ipinaglalaban lang natin ang karapatan natin sa karagatan na ‘yan ang future ng sustainability ng ating bansa,” Teodoro said during a press briefing on October 14. | via @jessiecruzat
🏆 BULLY AND PIRATE OF THE YEAR: SOUTH CHINA SEA EDITION
When intimidation replaces diplomacy, coercion challenges lawful maritime rights, and power is used to pressure neighboring states, the world sees a troubling truth: China’s claims to peaceful leadership ring hollow when its actions undermine respect for international law.
The South China Sea is not Beijing’s private playground. Power does not create sovereignty, intimidation does not establish legitimacy, and repeating a claim does not make it lawful. The Philippines will continue to defend its maritime rights under UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
China can project power, but it cannot bully its way into legal legitimacy.
🇵🇭 The West Philippine Sea is ours to defend. Philippine rights are not Beijing’s to dictate.

Mary, Mother of God, teach us to recognize your Son in the ordinary moments of our lives. When we become distracted by our worries and responsibilities, remind us that God is near. May we learn to find Him in prayer, in others, in our work, and in every blessing He sends. Amen.

Statement of the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea
10 October 2026 | Manila, Philippines
The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) strongly condemns the intrusion of Chinese Maritime Militia Vessel 9622 and its 22 deployed sampans into the territorial sea of Kota Island on 09 October 2026.
The Chinese vessels engaged in unauthorized fishing and reportedly dumped
waste at sea, with one sampan approaching as close as 250 meters from the island’s shoreline. When Philippine Coast Guard personnel, supported by the Philippine Marine Corps and the Philippine Navy, moved to address the intrusion, the Chinese mothership maneuvered around and encircled their boats, while its master brazenly claimed the area as Chinese territory and directed the Philippine team to leave.
Kota Island is an integral part of the Municipality of Kalayaan, Palawan, and its
territorial sea is under Philippine sovereignty. The Chinese vessels’ unauthorized
fishing activities violate Philippine laws, including Republic Act No. 12064
(Philippine Maritime Zones Act) and Republic Act No. 8550 (Philippine Fisheries
Code), as amended by RA No. 10654. China’s claim over the area has no basis
under international law.
We commend the Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine Marine Corps, and the
Philippine Navy for their firm, coordinated, and professional response, which resulted in the departure of all Chinese vessels from Kota Island’s territorial sea. This incident is particularly concerning because it involves the same Chinese maritime militia vessel that deployed 24 sampans near the island on 28 September 2026. Such repeated incursions underscore the need for sustained vigilance and a clear, consistent response to attempts to challenge Philippine sovereignty.
The NTF-WPS will continue to support the PCG and other concerned agencies in
protecting Philippine territory and maritime rights. Repeated intrusions, coercive
maneuvers, and baseless assertions of sovereignty will not be allowed to become
normalized in Philippine waters. The Philippines will continue to respond firmly, lawfully, and resolutely to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests in the West Philippine Sea. ###
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Defying Beijing's objections, giant Taiwan flags suspended under US-made Chinook helicopters were flown over Taipei ahead of the island's national day. Army pilot Lin Chang-cheng said seeing the flags fly was always 'extremely moving'
8 COUNTRIES REJECT US SANCTIONS ON ICC, VOW SUPPORT FOR INDEPENDENCE
UPDATE: Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have issued a joint statement opposing the United States announcement of sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“As committed supporters of the ICC we regret and strongly disagree with the announcement of sanctions to be imposed upon the Court by the United States,” the countries said in a statement dated Oct. 9.
The eight countries warned that the sanctions, if implemented, would significantly impact court operations, staff, and their families.
They reaffirmed their support for the ICC’s independence and pledged to work together to protect its mandate and advance accountability for serious international crimes. | @TristanNodalo
Kota Island is part of the Municipality of Kalayaan, Palawan. The waters within 12 nautical miles of it are Philippine territorial sea. No foreign vessel has any right to fish there under international law, the Philippine Fisheries Code, or the Philippine Maritime Zones Act.
China's own "domestic law" does not change any of this!
China's claim of "sovereign rights and jurisdiction over the relevant waters" was rejected in the 2016 Arbitral Award, which is final and binding.
Calling the area "Nansha Qundao" does not make it Chinese, and bringing up fishermen from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao does not make an intrusion legal.
Normal fishing doesn't happen 250 meters from the shoreline of an island where Filipino personnel are stationed. It doesn't come with a maritime militia mothership, CMMV 9622, deploying 22 sampans and dumping waste at sea.
This is the same vessel we repelled from Kota Island on 28 September. It came back less than two weeks later with more aggressive behavior.
Evidently, this is a coordinated militia operation, not a fishing trip!
