I still think that my original, instinctive reaction to the cancellation announcement is accurate. Amazon's problem with Gero's Stargate was that it was insufficiently woke. What else could it be.
"Not enough broad appeal" is the reason reported by Variety. Yet the creatives said they were writing it for broad appeal.
What this means is that it had the *wrong* broad appeal. It had broad appeal for real, existing audiences, instead of being written only for the far left and for activists, presumed to be "the modern audience" by a certain type of entertainment executive.
Its target audience was going to include conservatives and young men. It was going to feature masculinity and military men without apologizing for it and them. In other words, it was going to be actually inclusive instead of woke fake inclusive.
It was likely going to have strong women too. Stargate always had strong women. Just not the cringe-inducing girl bosses that dominated and destroyed nuTrek, NuWars and Rings of Power.
It was undoubtedly going to have racial diversity. Stargate always had racial diversity. But without the "systemic racism" lectures and the crude open borders messaging that we saw in Star Trek: Picard and Academy.
In SG-1, Carter and Teal'c had earned their positions through merit. Carter is a brilliant physicist and capable air force officer. Her very first lines in SG-1 shut down any notion of tokenism :
"I'm an Air Force officer just like you are, Colonel. And just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside, doesn't mean I can't handle whatever you can handle."
She is the best. She does not need to lecture on systemic bias, or be affirmed as "first woman to...". She does not do protected-class fragility.
Teal'c is a genuine hero, not a diversity hire. When he was accepted into SG-1, it was based on deeds, not skin color. There was no SGC DEIB committee that decided that SG-1's otherwise all-white demographics were a problem worse than the Goa'uld, and needed to be fixed by adding Teal'c.
That's the difference between then and now. Color-blind, merit-based equality then. Toxic identity politics, "equity" and neo-racism now.
I have no proof that this take is correct, but it is all too plausible, given the pattern of DEI reboots of other sci-fi franchises.
Brilliant idea! Next up: Apple randomly reboots your Mac if you're building competing tech, Gmail silently edits your email if you mention rival platforms, and Tesla Autopilot swerves if it detects you're working on self-driving cars.
All in the name of safety, of course. Because malicious actors controlling the world’s operating systems, inboxes and cars would be extremely dangerous!
NON !!!!
You can tell a lot about how efficiently a country runs based on how quickly it approves FSD via Article 39 recognition.
It's a life-saving feature that requires 0 work to implement.
The most corrupt, slow and broken countries will be the last ones to have it.
