Why I Believe We Need More Than Maslow and Bloom
As an educator, therapist, former principal, and author, I've come to believe that many of our struggles in education happen because we focus on the visible outcome instead of the root cause.
We ask:
- Why won't this student learn?
- Why won't they listen?
- Why won't they behave?
But often, we're looking at the effect, not the cause.
That's why the ideas of Maslow, Bloom, Bowlby, Bronfenbrenner, Montessori, Elkind, and Levine matter so much.
Maslow – Meet Needs First
Why: A child in survival mode cannot consistently thrive in learning mode.
How: Prioritize safety, belonging, connection, and emotional well-being before expecting peak performance.
Bloom – Build Thinking Skills
Why: Learning is more than memorizing facts.
How: Move beyond recall and help students analyze, create, solve problems, and think critically.
Bowlby – Relationships Matter
Why: Connection creates confidence.
How: Be the trusted adult who helps students feel seen, valued, and supported.
Bronfenbrenner – The Environment Matters
Why: Students don't learn in isolation.
How: Strengthen partnerships between school, home, and community.
Montessori – Foster Independence
Why: Ownership increases engagement.
How: Give students meaningful choices and opportunities to take responsibility for their learning.
Elkind – Protect Childhood
Why: Overstressed children struggle to flourish.
How: Make room for play, curiosity, creativity, and joy.
Levine – Every Brain Learns Differently
Why: Students have different strengths and challenges.
How: Focus on understanding how a student learns, not just what they learn.
When we combine these ideas, we stop asking, "What's wrong with this child?"
And we start asking, "What does this child need to be successful?"
That shift changes everything.
