Haru Urara: The Horse Who Never Won and Became a National Legend
Haru Urara ran 113 races between 1998 and 2004. She lost every single one, including an 80 race losing streak at one point in her career, all at the small Kochi Racecourse.
Her career happened to coincide with the tail end of Japan's "Lost Decade" recession. Kochi Racecourse was nearly bankrupt when her losing streak went national.
Instead of fading into obscurity, she became a phenomenon. Daily attendance at Kochi had dropped to just 1,600 spectators, then surged to 5,000 for her 100th loss and 8,000 for her 101st. By her 106th race in March 2004, over 13,000 fans showed up. She even became the betting favorite at one point, with fans buying tickets as lucky charms rather than to actually win.
Then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said he'd "like to see Haru Urara win, even just once. The horse is a good example of not giving up in the face of defeat."
She finally got her one win in 2019, in a friendly race for retired horses, 15 years after retiring.
Haru Urara died on September 9, 2025, at age 29.
0 wins, 113 losses, and a legacy bigger than most champions ever get.
