Strong rumours are circulating in Jammu & Kashmir that the Centre may grant statehood to the Union Territory on the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. That is, tomorrow. What’s even more bizarre is that rumour mills are suggesting that Kashmir and Jammu will be separated and reorganised into two separate states.

If either is true, nothing could be more disastrous. It would essentially fulfil the Dixon Plan — the division of Jammu & Kashmir along religious lines — effectively handing over the Muslim-majority region to Pakistan. No Muslim-majority region along India’s borders can remain unaffected by the Pakistan Army and its jihadist foot soldiers and terrorists.

If the logic is that Jammu, a Hindu-majority region, has been unable to enjoy power despite its demographic dominance, and that the Muslim-majority Kashmiri leadership has continually discriminated against it, then it is clear that the two-nation theory of Iqbal, Jinnah and now General Asim Munir has succeeded nowhere in India except Jammu & Kashmir. But if they succeed in Jammu & Kashmir today, they will succeed in the rest of India tomorrow — if not tomorrow, then the day after, or years later.

India was founded on its ancient philosophy of pluralism, equality and liberty for all. Any division of Jammu & Kashmir along religious lines will undo India as a school of thought. It would be nothing less than a tragic catastrophe. But why are these canards being spread?
