24 years ago today, the King Black Dragon was released as RuneScape’s first true boss!

Accessible via a teleport lever in the Wilderness lava maze dungeon, it was Classic's strongest creature. The update also brought the Dragon Med Helmet—the game's first piece of Dragon armor.

runescape was a big part of my life

id spend 5-7 hours every single day after school grinding to be a pure mage, i dont even remember doing hw lol

stopped at lvl 89 because runes got too expensive

i had 2 accounts

one was good at everything, but my overall level was too high, so id get clapped in the wilderness

my pure mage though...

amazing at pvp

i worked for over a year to finally get enough gp to trade for a santa hat, one of the rarest items in the game

it was fking insane

back then, there wasn't an easy way to transfer items between your accounts

you had to log into the same server on both, go to the exact same secluded spot, drop the item, log out, then log into your other account and wait for it to appear

so obviously, i wanted my lvl 89 pure mage to flex the santa hat

i found a secluded spot

checked everywhere to make sure no one was around

brought both accounts there

dropped the santa hat

logged out

and suddenly...

i couldn't log back in

i don't remember if the server was full or my internet was bugging out, but i was panicking

by the time i finally got back in

the santa hat was gone

and there was some random guy nearby SCREAMING that he just found a santa hat

i begged him to give it back

begged and begged

he just ran away

then disappeared and logged off

one of the saddest days of my life 😭

i quit runescape forever after that

but looking back, im weirdly grateful for all of it

spending that much time on the game as a kid gave me a lens for so many things i see on the internet today

different game
different graphics
different money

but somehow, everything is still the same

the markets, the flexing, the grinding, the scams, the rare items, the communities, the gambling, the friends

runescape will probably always be a part of how i see the internet

and most importantly...
