On August 31, Cornell University and the Rockefeller Foundation sponsored a War Game attended by members of the U.S. Congress, diplomats, and experts in the art of war.

The scenario was as follows: it is 2028, Russia attacks Moldova, and one of its drones hits a NATO fuel storage facility on Romanian territory. Not only is NATO territory attacked, but there are also fatalities — civilian casualties. Romanians killed by Russia.

The U.S. decision — represented in the scenario by this group of experts and politicians — was not to escalate. Members of Congress argued that American society would not support military intervention to eliminate the threat.

The conclusion of this scenario: NATO’s Article 5 is powerless. All of this information was provided by David Ignatius in Foreign Policy; he was present at the War Game. Foreign Policy is a publication read by leaders around the world. I’ll post the article in the comments.

In 2025, I said this: we need to move closer to Europe’s core, not to the United States. The U.S. cannot defend us against Russia because it does not want to. Only Europe has the will to defend us against Russia, but it lacks the capability. For Europe to gain that capability, it must be supported.

Today, I would add this: with every EU member state that falls into the Trump administration’s trap of aligning itself with the United States rather than with Europe’s core, the chances of the European Union being able to defend itself on its own, should the need arise, are further weakened. And when the right moment comes for Russia to attack, the responsibility for Europe’s defence will lie with Europeans, not Americans.

Every one of us who allows Europe’s common defence to be eroded — whether it is the president, media outlets paid for by oligarchs, a useful idiot — will bear responsibility and blame for the deaths of civilians when the scenario tested a week ago becomes reality.

And as you can see, I am saying unequivocally that it will happen. I am not saying this for the first time today, or yesterday. I have been saying it since 2025. The intelligence services of the Baltic states, among others, have all confirmed that the Kremlin is preparing for this.

It is only a matter of time — and of Russia synchronising its move with even greater European failures. Russia will attack NATO. I hope the European Union will be ready to break its teeth before it sinks them too deeply into us.

This is beyond reprehensible.

According to The Washington Post, while Witkoff and Kushner were supposedly in Moscow trying to negotiate an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine, they were also discussing potentially large U.S.-Russian economic projects with the Kremlin. (One thing to watch closely: whether any U.S.-Russian economic deal emerging from these negotiations creates direct or indirect financial benefits for Trump-linked businesses or members of his family.)

Putin’s foreign-policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said that “economic issues and potentially large, mutually beneficial joint projects for Russia and America were discussed in considerable detail.”

Russia is waging a war of aggression against Ukraine, Putin is showing little willingness to abandon his maximalist demands, and the two men Trump has ostensibly "entrusted" with negotiating a settlement are simultaneously discussing potentially large U.S.-Russian economic projects with the Kremlin.

Then Witkoff sits across from Putin, a war criminal, and tells him that, when they retire and look back on their lives, their conversations with him will be “right at the top” of their incredible memories.

Utterly disgusting.

The Washington Post reported the economic discussions today, citing Ushakov. Reuters has independently reported that economic cooperation was discussed in detail during the three-hour meeting.

To call these "negotiations" is laughable. A more apt description would be: two hucksters meet a war criminal to do business.

Stamattina ho letto uno dei tanti straordinari post del mio amico Mattia Madonia, che si chiedeva cosa direbbe Indro Montanelli del suo allievo @marcotravaglio, e così, davanti alla mia vecchia Olivetti Lettera 22, ho pensato di somministrare il post all’AI come elemento di contesto e le ho chiesto di commentare il “lavoro” di Travaglio come se a scrivere fosse Montanelli. L’AI ha scelto autonomamente una lettera aperta, che riporto di seguito senza correzioni.

Caro Marco,
la chiamo per nome, come si fa con i figliocci e con i traditori: due categorie che, in una vita lunga e litigiosa, ho imparato a non tenere troppo distanti. Le batto queste righe sulla Lettera 22 - la verde - che qualcuno ha avuto la bontà di recapitarmi quassù, o quaggiù, non ho ancora capito in quale reparto mi abbiano sistemato. La macchina per scrivere ha un difetto che è la sua unica virtù: batte una lettera per volta, e ogni tasto è un fatto. Con una Lettera 22 non si bara. Con una linea editoriale, a quanto vedo, sì.

Le devo un ringraziamento e una frustata, nell’ordine. Il ringraziamento è per avermi copiato la posa: il bastian contrario, l’uomo solo controvento, quello che dà del somaro a tutti. Bravo. Ha imparato la mia faccia. Peccato che della mia faccia lei abbia preso la smorfia e buttato via l’osso: perché controcorrente ci si va per amore dei fatti, non per amore della corrente contraria. Io, la guerra di un piccolo popolo aggredito da un colosso, l’ho vista con questi occhi, nel Quaranta, sugli sci, al gelo, tra i finlandesi. Non commentai una riga: raccontai. Raccontai la neve, i cecchini bianchi, i carri sovietici che si impantanavano nella loro stessa arroganza. E il lettore, senza che io glielo dicessi, diventava profinlandese. Perché la verità, quando la lasci in pace, cammina da sola.

È il mestiere, caro Marco. Quello che lei ha smesso di fare.
Perché quando un altro piccolo popolo - lo scriva pure, il nome, Ucraina, non morde - si è trovato sotto lo stesso colosso, con lo stesso pretesto delle minoranze da proteggere e delle zone cuscinetto da inventare, lei che ha fatto? Ha lasciato parlare i fatti? No. Ha lasciato parlare le veline. Ha preso il comunicato dell’aggressore e gli ha messo addosso la cravatta buona del dubbio: l’«eh, ma la NATO», l’«eh, ma non è tutto bianco e nero». Certo che non è tutto bianco e nero. Ma quando un carro armato entra in casa d’altri, il colore glielo do io: è del colore del torto.

Lei mi dirà che pone domande, che dubita, che non si fa arruolare. Il dubbio, caro figliolo, è un arnese sacro, a patto di usarlo su tutti. Il suo lo tira fuori sempre e soltanto contro gli aggrediti. Un dubbio a senso unico non è giornalismo: è ufficio stampa con la puzza sotto il naso.

Le confesso una cosa, ché quassù (o quaggiù) si diventa sinceri per noia. Di errori ne ho collezionati a bizzeffe, alcuni imperdonabili, e ho pagato anche con del piombo nelle gambe, regalatomi da gente che il dubbio non lo tollerava affatto. Non le do lezioni di virtù: sarei ridicolo. Le do una lezione di mestiere, l’unica cosa su cui posso ancora permettermi la superbia. Ed è vecchia come il piombo dei tipografi: i fatti prima, l’opinione dopo, e mai - mai - l’opinione travestita da fatto.

Lei ha fatto l’esatto contrario. Ha preso il mio metodo, l’ha capovolto, e ci ha appiccicato sopra la mia foto come un santino. È l’unico plagio che non le perdono: non quello dei fatti, ma quello della faccia.

La saluto. E le lascio, come si usa tra maestri e cattivi allievi, un compito per casa: un giorno solo, uno, provi a far parlare i fatti dell’aggredito con la stessa generosità con cui fa parlare i dubbi dell’aggressore. Vedrà che fatica. Il mestiere è tutto lì.
