Ed Sheeran’s band just walked off the tour and so did the openers. They wanted a political statement more than they wanted to play. Fine. Sheeran still has a stadium full of people who paid to hear songs. That’s what a true artist does. He puts the entertainment of others ahead of anything else, including activism.

Sheeran already said kids come to his shows for music, not a forum. That still holds, even more so now. Macklemore used Sheeran’s stage as a rally. Venues said they’d cancel dates. The promoter pulled him. Now the rest of the bill is quitting to prove a point. That’s their right, but it isn’t bravery. It’s leaving the guy who sells the tickets. It’s abandoning your job to satisfy your political propaganda.

Sheeran made music his priority. That’s why people show up. A band that would rather walk than play can book its own gig, if they can find one. Sheeran will find musicians who want to work and give fans the enjoyment of a song. That’s the point of going to a concert.
