A hedgehog scratching is a common sight, but not for the reason most think.
Despite the myth, hedgehogs do not have fleas. Well, no more than any other animal.
In fact, it's quite rare for a hedgehog to have fleas, and when they do, the fleas are species-specific, so they can't infect any other animal.
Fleas on a hedgehog are a huge red flag - a sign that the animal is sick, malnourished, or otherwise so weakened that his immune system is unable to fight, making him a target for opportunistic parasites.
The real reason hedgehogs are often seen scratching is simply ringworm, which is intensely itchy.
Ringworm, despite its name, isn't a worm at all but a fungal infection. For more information see: https://t.co/kQaFQq1uGV
The hedgehogs in these four hospital pens here all have ringworm. It's not the reason they were admitted, but it's being treated, while they are here being treated for various other life-threatening conditions.
This was last night, Friday.
Merlin and Luca both had their ringworm treatment baths that morning.
Compared to Anya and Christian, whose baths weren't until this morning, you can see how the treatment has dramatically relieved their symptoms.
So when you see or hear the silly old myth of hedgehogs being fleabags please correct it, and help restore the reputation of these charming, harmless little animals.🥰
Waiting in the rain!
There's been some very interesting & changeable weather in London lately. We sometimes go through all the seasons in the space of a few hours.
Luckily I love capturing the rain & I couldn't resist this puddle reflection photo outside Southgate tube station
Johnny Ball, beloved presenter and household name from 1980s children's television, paid us his first-ever visit this week after bringing in an injured juvenile crow he spotted struggling in his garden.
Thank you, Johnny, for helping wildlife when it needed you most!
The new admissions just keep coming, Coleslaw was found out during the daytime very hypothermic and dehydrated a couple of days ago, now looking much brighter 🙌
👷♀️👷♂️ The new Bristol Brabazon station on the former Filton Airfield is coming on leaps & bounds, in line with our construction programme.
💪 On the late May bank holiday weekend the station footbridge was assembled in less than 24 hrs.

👁I know it seems obvious but water is an absolute lifeline for all wildlife, especially for lactating vixens still nursing their cubs.🦊
I got multiple water dishes out at different levels in my garden and bring 10 liters of water into the cemetery that usually get lapped up within 24 hours.
Please provide always provide fresh water for wildlife but especially during these scorching hot days!🙏🐾 Fruit high in water content such as watermelons are also a much appreciated hydrating treat!

A rare magic moment shared with little vixen Summer. Nothing beats coming eye to eye with a wild fox who approaches you on their own terms.🦊🧡
Just to clarify: I have never and will never hand-feed or stroke a wild fox. The reason is that there is nothing to be gained by the fox if I was to do this.
There is a worrying trend on social media to post selfies whilst hand-feeding a fox. It makes my blood boil. To train a fox to associate a human hand with food is stupid, selfish and puts the fox in great danger!
Let the animals to chose to approach you and just be in the moment, sit still and watch. Don't try to tame or train them. They are not ours but wild and free. 🐾
