Don’t fall for most of those stories about a wife dictating her husband’s generosity towards his siblings or parents. That’s often a myth. What usually happens is that, as a bachelor, the man had fewer responsibilities and therefore more disposable income to share to multiple relatives.

Marriage changes that equation, especially once children arrive. Suddenly, he’s responsible not only for himself but for the well-being of a family that depends on him full-time. Naturally, a huge chunk of the money that once went to siblings now gets channelled into diapers, baby formula, clothes, medical bills, and countless other needs.

This reality check and adjustment is too often blamed on the wife, simply because she’s an easy target. In truth, it’s just the husbands’ family’s cowardice showing. They are too cowardly to confront their brother and son who made the economic decision to reprioritise, or blind to the fact that the man now carries a heavier burden than before.
