Enduring to the end is not merely a relentless determination to grit our teeth, hold on to the limits of our physical strength and mental capacity, and push through the challenges and adversities of mortal life; it is so much more than that.

Enduring to the end is linked inextricably to the spiritual gift of charity, or the pure love of Christ. As we are blessed to receive this supernal gift, a transformation occurs in our spiritual nature and character. Charity encompasses both what we do and what we can become as this spiritual gift ultimately possesses us.

As we follow, love, and serve the Savior, we gradually focus less on our own desires and interests, and more on understanding and addressing the needs of others. We do not merely perform benevolent deeds; rather, our state of being is changed and becomes increasingly Christlike. Charity, then, ultimately possesses us.

The scriptural phrase “endure to the end” is a repeated reminder of the mighty spiritual change in our hearts that should be ongoing throughout our lives; it also is His promise of what we may become if we truly are possessed of the pure love of Christ. #GeneralConference

If you’ve been a Latter-day Saint for a while already (or were raised in the Church), you may have heard President Oaks’ recent #GeneralConference talk and thought, “Wow. Families. There’s a topic I’ve been hearing about relentlessly since I was born. Nothing new here.” But you would be very wrong about that—not because the doctrine has moved (it obviously has not!) but because the world has.

Current anti-family culture is a calamity at least a century in the making. And as the family unit is the molecule of which eternity is composed—the origin and destiny of our species—President Oaks is indeed saying something new to us about something older than time. He’s calling us to take part in the restoration of the fullness of times, because the Lord instructed him to call us, right now: RESTORE THE FAMILY.

Restore holy matrimony. Restore raising up children unto the Lord with a loving and faithful mother and a loving and faithful father who love each other, and who love God more than self.

Restore manhood and fatherhood. Restore womanhood and motherhood. Restore teaching children to “walk in the ways of truth and soberness⁠” and “to love one another, and to serve one another” (Mosiah 4:15) in a home as safe and fortified as the walls of the Savior’s sheepfold.

Restore families that are spiritually, emotionally, and physically self-reliant so they may be of use in the Lord’s kingdom for nurturing and fortifying the vulnerable among us who have no such refuge of their own.

Spirits are going to come to earth. They need to. They want to. And they need the best odds they can possibly get. So start with the first molecular bond—legal and lawful marriage, ideally by covenant in the temple of the Lord. And then, if the will of God allows, begin to create new bodies for awaiting spirits to inhabit, and put your whole self into providing them a good start in their life journey.

You are not just having a family. You’re building a Zion fit for the King’s return. Begin where you are, with the ends in mind, and God will show you the way.

Let’s brainstorm. Some of you are business-minded, pattern-seeing, divergent-thinking, or spiritually intuitive. How do we adapt this timeless goal with tools of a modern era? What are your concrete plans that others may find useful in their homes?
