Government ministers couldn’t explain the dollar crisis yesterday. Instead, they practically criminalised every citizen, accusing them of money laundering. Abdullah Shahid just spelled out exactly why the crisis is happening.

From increased government spending on massive reclamation projects, military equipment, including drones and lavish ceremonial expenses, to MACL’s USD revenue being diverted to fund land reclamation for Muizzu’s vanity projects, the reasons are right there.

At the same time, resorts are forced to pay TGST, Green Tax, land rent, foreign loan repayments, fuel costs, and expatriate staff salaries in USD. And now, without any prior consultation with the industry, foreign currency surrender requirements are being pushed up to as much as 40% creating extreme uncertainty for businesses and putting their ability to meet foreign loan repayments and other USD obligations at risk.

Muizzu must resign immediately.
