In England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧 you sometimes see these “wavy” brick fences. And curious as it may seem, this shape uses FEWER bricks than a straight wall. A straight wall needs at least two layers of bricks to make is sturdy, but the wavy wall is fine thanks to the arch support provided by the waves...

These are called crinkle-crankle walls. They appear whimsical at first, like they were designed for aesthetics, but their origins are actually engineering. A straight brick wall that is only one brick thick is structurally weak — it can be pushed over or can collapse under small lateral forces. To make a straight wall stable, you usually need two courses of bricks side by side, which doubles material usage. But when you introduce a repeated serpentine curve, the wall gains strength because every bend acts like a buttress. The load paths distribute sideways pressure through the sinusoidal shape, stabilizing the wall without additional mass.

This design became especially common in parts of England where landowners wanted long boundary walls but wanted to reduce cost. Over a long distance, one course of bricks snaked back and forth could save thousands of bricks compared to a straight double-width equivalent. Garden estates adopted the pattern in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially in East Anglia. The geometry also had horticultural advantages — microclimates formed in the concave pockets which made them popular as fruit walls. Warmth collected on the south-facing curves, protecting apples and pears.

Modern viewers think they are decorative first, but historically the decoration was a side effect of cost efficiency and structural logic.

Thomas Jefferson even built crinkle-crankle walls at Monticello in the United States after seeing the concept in England.
