It is going to take strengthening of voices and institutions outside FIFA, particularly players and fans, the key stakeholders of the game to finally reform a FIFA that periodically stumbles into crisis and disgrace.

The first step is to create genuine external accountability.

There is not enough of this occurring, which is why we arrived here again, and this present scandal does offer an opportunity for the player’s representative body to demonstrate capability. They should be taking the lead.

However, what’s needed is not only an item list, but an execution strategy.

Players and fan groups can now co-develop a strategy to apply pressure for change, based on governance reform or an alternative vision, if necessary.

Unfortunately, the game’s key stakeholders have largely been bystanders as the game has descended into farce. But this is where real leverage for change resides.

This latest crisis should be the trigger for new alliances and new thinking, as well as their own reform and reinvention - followed by FIFA.
