.@JohnStrong said the last multi-goal scorer in a WC match was Bert Patenaude in 1930 but Aldo “Buff” Donelli scored four goals against Mexico in 1934, in the play-in game. I’m going to die alone.
Your mileage may vary, but there is very little energy out there right now in terms of it being a USMNT match day at a World Cup, let alone a home one. The pall over this tourney is real, I think. I’m in LA (well away from SoFi) and few people seem to care.
Another World Cup, another press conference where Gianni Infantino has to defend FIFA against any number of allegations. At least he didn’t call himself a migrant worker this time.

Here in Mexico City, protests, strikes and public unrest have understandably given some locals complicated feelings ahead of the opener tomorrow afternoon.
My story, on the Guardian: https://t.co/acDYN4vgzX
Such a universal feeling. At 14, I walked into the Bernabeu for the first time. I remember my eyes kept going up and up and up. It was my first exposure to a venue like that, and it has stuck with me.
This is the most “The European mind can’t comprehend this” moment of my life. One of my friends said, “Punch me five times tomorrow and I’ll still think this isn’t real.”
Hi friends, I'm on my way to Mexico City to cover the World Cup opener for the Guardian.
I'll be on the road for a month. I'll post here, but will also post a lot on IG - https://t.co/C59RYwhXbL. I've made my profile public for now, if you want to follow along. Let's go, y'all.
In Dallas, legendary muralist Wyland had a massive, 82-foot "whaling wall" painted over in favor of a planned piece of World Cup artwork.
FIFA says they had nothing to do with it, but Wyland isn't buying it. He's suing them for $25 million.

Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami felt impossible until it happened. What looked like a fantasy transfer instantly turned MLS into a global spectacle.
To clarify - the earliest Tanner could’ve returned was 6/1. He remains ineligible to return to work until he finishes that training & the Union/MLS evaluates it.
I’ve poked around a bit more on former Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner’s status at the club.
His suspension is over, but he’s still not with the club and still hasn’t completed his league-ordered restorative practices training.

A team gathering around a laptop in the middle of a game is an odd enough sight in soccer that it became a memeable moment for the #USMNT on Sunday. But could a similar, NBA-style timeout happen at the World Cup? It's unclear.

From Charlotte, my match report on the USMNT's encouraging, 3-2 effort against Senegal.
Lots of positives, but defensive concerns linger, to say the least.

No, it doesn't. At his presser yesterday Pochettino literally turned to Ream and said "this does not mean you will always be on the field" (paraphrasing) https://t.co/q3W4M5i4Au
@MLSist It’s because it all but confirms his status within the starting 11. Ream should be a rotational piece and offer a veteran presence in the locker room. Making Tyler the captain would not throw any added pressure either, he has always taken on that mantle.
Underrated point.
As an aside, Ream is widely respected and liked by the group. I truly don't understand the heartburn around his selection — his own teammates certainly don't understand it.
@ConcacafEdgar ohhhhh we're not connecting. I thought you were saying that the word Continental is in there because of Continental tire. Now we're on the same page. :)
Continental Clásico??? Are the USA and Senegal on the same continent now? Lol. Maybe the important thing is just that both countries are countries that are... on continents.
I'm starting to question the sanctity of the Allstate Continental Clásico.
