I got up at 4:30 a.m. and walked the streets of Kigali feeling like an alien. Everything was quiet and empty: except for the casual laborers already heading to construction sites and Nyabugogo looking for a day’s work.

These people leave home in the dark so they can be first in line for jobs. One mason told me that if you arrive late, you might get nothing that day. So they start early, walk far, and work hard. That early hustle helps build the city and keeps Rwanda moving forward.

Tonight, I had the privilege of attending the opening of the Kigali Cine Junction Film Festival Week, where we watched #Kwibuka (Remember, Se souvenir), a powerful 2025 Belgian-Rwandan drama directed by Jonas D'Adesky and starring French-Rwandan actress and former Miss France Sonia Rolland.

The film follows Lia, a Belgian-Rwandan basketball player who returns to Rwanda to join the national team, only to embark on a deeply personal journey of identity, memory, and healing. As someone whose life has been shaped by both the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and the transformative power of sport, this story resonated with me deeply. It beautifully shows how sport can become a bridge to healing, belonging, and reconciliation.

Watching it alongside my son, who was born and still lives in London, made it even more meaningful. It reminded me of the importance of sharing our stories with younger generations so they remain connected to Rwanda's history, resilience, and hope.

Watching the film under the stars and a bright moon at Imbuga City Walk (Car Free Zone), in the heart of Kigali, made the experience uniquely Rwandan—a beautiful blend of our country's natural beauty, vibrant public spaces, powerful storytelling, and collective remembrance.

Congratulations to the filmmakers and to the organisers of the Kigali Cine Junction Film Festival Week for opening the festival with such a moving and important film.
