ZELENSKYY: Ukraine has never wanted this war. Everyone knows that. From the very first day of the war, we have wanted peace, justice for Ukraine, and guaranteed security.

Russian leadership knows that dignified peace is possible. They know that occupation cannot be legitimized.

They know that the longer the war continues, the harder it becomes to deal with its consequences.

Russia must choose peace. The tools to achieve this exist.

Against the backdrop of another wave of anti-Ukrainian rhetoric in Poland, Donald Tusk made a simple but important statement today:

> “I will not contribute to fueling tensions between Poland and Ukraine.”

With these words, the Polish prime minister explained why he refused to sign Karol Nawrocki's decision to strip the President of Ukraine of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest state honor.

At a time when many seek to score political points by exploiting emotions and conflict, such a position deserves respect.

I would like to thank Donald Tusk and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski for their restraint, responsibility, and political maturity.

It is equally important to thank the millions of Poles who have refused to give in to hostility between our two nations.

Ukrainians and Poles share a complex history.

But it is precisely in difficult times that the ability to preserve common sense and not allow politics to destroy what has been built over many years becomes most valuable.

That is why the voices of those who choose dialogue over confrontation matter more than ever today.

The Russian leadership is now pulling more air defense assets to Moscow, Valdai, and Putin’s bridge across the Kerch Strait – at the expense of air defense elsewhere.

In the Moscow region alone, they have amassed hundreds of launchers for S-400, S-500, and Pantsir systems. Nearly 90 launchers have been redeployed to Valdai from other regions of Russia, and a special air defense division is also being formed there to safeguard the peace and quiet of the Russian chief.

To compare, there are only a couple of launchers per direction across Russia and around their other cities. Those are their priorities. They are protecting their power – the source of this war. More than 60 Russian regions are already experiencing fuel shortages. There has also been a sharp increase in gas and diesel prices – if they are available at all.

Russian security services have even proposed postponing or cancelling altogether the ritual of electing “United Russia” to the State Duma. Their latest imitation of elections was scheduled for September, and intelligence reports now show that Russia itself is not confident about what will be happening by September.

There are many difficulties – all because Putin refuses to end his war and to hear our proposals for a meeting, genuine negotiations, and a dignified peace.

The myth of Vladimir Putin as a geopolitical mastermind is officially dead.

His reckless war of choice in Ukraine has revealed a horrible strategist who mistook the weakness of his enemies for his own strength.

For nearly twenty years, the Russian dictator enjoyed a series of foreign policy ”wins” that made him look like a sort of strategic genius. From a Russian perspective, his aggressive moves seemed calculated and bold, but they only succeeded because Western leaders preferred appeasement over confrontation. Putin simply went further and broke more rules than anyone else was willing to tolerate at the time.

That dynamic changed completely when he launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Rather than collapsing in days, Ukraine stood its ground and exposed the profound incompetence of the Russian military command. Putin's complete lack of foresight has trapped his country in a brutal war of attrition that he cannot easily win or escape.

The long-term consequences for Russia are devastating. He has systematically destroyed his nation's future, isolated its economy, and turned it into a dependent junior partner to China.

Watching a supposedly smart but evil leader dismantle his own empire through pure arrogance is nothing short of pathetic. Putin is no strategic mastermind

APPLEBAUM: Putin presented a fake image of Russia to the world. He talks about himself as leader of traditional society.

In fact, divorce rates are very high in Russia, abortion is very common, very few Russians go to church, and less than 5% of Russians have ever read a Bible.

So it's not an especially religious or traditional culture, but Putin has made himself the face of that idea because it's politically advantageous.

He uses it both to build support, to court, and to win over sympathizers in the West, and maybe he uses it at home as well.

It looks a little bit like how in the 1930s Soviet communists also sold a vision of the Soviet Union to Americans and Europeans about how marvelous it was and how they had discovered a new kind of political system.

If you've never been to Russia, Russia is a large country, it's far away, so you can imagine a lot of things about it. You can create a kind of imaginary Russia, an imaginary Soviet Union.

Especially if you only visit Moscow and St. Petersburg, like most tourists do. But most of the people who admire Russia haven't even been to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

It's very similar today. You have a part of European right and American right who have this imaginary Russia that they use as a symbol, without understanding that it has no relationship to reality.
