Spanish & French Catholics were critical allies in winning the Revolution.
AND not all the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Protestant.
Have you not heard of Charles Carroll,
a proud Catholic from Maryland??? His name is just beneath John Hancock. Charles Carroll was actually the wealthiest (by a lot!) all those who signed the Declaration of Independence and therefore risked losing the most, financially speaking. Since his name was fairly common, he made sure to sign his name “Charles Carroll of Carrollton”so that the British Crown would know exactly who he was and hang the right Charles Carroll should he be tried for treason. He was willing to put it all on the line for freedom. Despite being wealthy, he still endured religious persecution and suspicion in the colonies as a Catholic, yet he courageously joined the cause for independence. Sadly, his story is not in our children’s history books because of a long history of Protestant bias. It’s also not the only story of Catholic bravery in our glorious revolution. There are Spaniards (General Bernardo de Galvez, Governor of Louisiana) and of course the French (General Lafayette fought in the battle of Yorktown) all Catholics, who helped, and without their help, the Americans would not have won. There is also the story of Catholic Native Americans in Maine. George Washington wrote a letter to their chief asking for their help fighting the British. Their help as warriors, scouts & guides proved critical in the defeat of the Red Coats in the final days. Washington knew that these natives detested the British because they had banned them from practicing Catholicism and murdered the beloved Catholic missionary monks (the black robes, as they called them) who lived among them. The Passamoquadday only agreed to help if, among other promises, George Washington brought them Black Robes to live with them so the tribe could have Mass & holy Eucharist and continue practicing their faith. George Washington sent word to French ships off our coast who were helping us and missionary priest were brought to Maine in exchange for this critical assistance by the Passamoquadday tribe.

For those confused by the sudden and seemingly coordinated invective against “post-liberalism” and “integralism,” the terms are slogans to mask a neo-Know-Nothing contempt for Catholics. It’s not that they don’t refer to real ideas. But in common harangues, they simply express opposition to Catholics, much as “Zionist” and “Talmudic,” also real and distinct concepts, usually just mean “Jew.”

@RelatablewABS Catholics were a big part of the founding. They were among the signers of both the Declaration & Constitution. And they founded on of the 13 colonies -Maryland. Country was founded by Christians fleeing religious persecution by the Church of England (also Protestant) - go figure

England has been Christian since its inception in 927 AD.

AD means Anno Domini, “in the year of the Lord.” Even the way we talk about the year is Christian.

England is and always has been a Christian country.

We have enough foreigners attempting to destroy our heritage. We do not need our own people attacking the faith, too.

There is no neutral. Nature abhors a vacuum. If Christianity is removed it will not be left with a generic secular egalitarian “cultural Christianity,” It will be replaced by Islam.

Look around our country. The choice is clearly Christianity or Islam.

I am not saying one has to celebrate Saints’ days. But one certainly does not need to choose to undermine them.

If one does not like Saint George’s Day - do not celebrate it. It is as simple as that.

St George’s Day means a lot to many of us. It is a national celebration, and we need all of those we can get, these days.

Funny how people always pull down St George’s Day. They never do the same to St Patrick. Why are others allowed a patriotic holiday, but we are not?

@consermillen you are really getting a lot of oxygen off one poll . A poll with odd categories. It separates white vs black protestants; show how disunited Protestant are that is even a thing .

And separates more liberal Protestant groups from more conservative ones then compares to all Catholics.

And do you ever stop and think that Muslims would likely have even higher percentages than white evangelicals on all these questions- does that make them the standard Allie?

Would have been nice to have evangelicals join their Catholic brothers and sisters in that fight before abortion spread like a cancer.

Catholics have been against abortion since the beginning. Same regarding no divorce and many other social issues cited.

You should join the faith that is unwavering from season to season.

At the heart of today’s conservative infighting is a divide long in the making.

It was masked by a common enemy—liberalism. With that (at least temporarily) weakened, the fault lines are now visible.

The roots go back to the World Wars, which fractured Christianity in the West—especially in Europe. America inherited influence, but not continuity or coherence.

In that vacuum, distinctly American theological movements took hold—Dispensationalism, the Prosperity Gospel, Unitarianism —many far removed from historic Christianity.

What looks like vitality is often instability: constant reinvention, fragmentation, and doctrinal drift.

At the same time, postwar conservatism evolved into a more global project—what we now call neoconservatism. That made sense in the face of communism, but that framework is aging.

More notably, it absorbed elements of this same theological confusion. Dispensationalism, in particular, has shaped the thinking of a segment of conservatives—despite being a minority view, largely absent from historic Christianity, and unfamiliar to most Christians worldwide.

A nation can be powerful and spiritually hollow—and that doesn’t last.

If conservatism is to endure, it must be re-rooted in cultural and moral clarity—and a renewed focus on domestic health, not just global dominance.

Steve, a lot of respect for you. But of you areworried about damage to American Protestantism, take a hard look at Paula White.

The World Wars devastated Christianity in the West—breaking Europe’s cultural and institutional backbone. America benefited, but it hasn’t exactly led to moral flourishing: abortion, the sexual revolution, divorce, and porn all point the other way.

Post-WWII conservatism shifted toward global dominance “for the common good.” That made sense against communism—but that framework is aging. It’s time to recalibrate toward a more traditional conservatism rooted in moral and cultural strength at home. A nation can be militarily powerful and spiritually shallow—and that won’t last.

American Christianity is both strong and unstable. It’s charitable and energetic, but also fragmented. More denominations and theological offshoots come from the U.S. than anywhere else—many foreign not just to the world, but to historic Christianity itself (Mormonism, Prosperity Gospel, Dispensationalism, etc.).

There’s constant churn—new ideas, new trends, little permanence. What feels like vitality is often instability.

If we care about preserving Christianity and conservatism, we have to confront that honestly.
