15) It's easy to expand your learning by following more Muslim women. I focus on sports so I can definitely suggest there but it doesn't take much time. Google can be your friend. Take the time. Unlearn and go forward.
Happy #MuslimWomensDay
14) We identify as Muslim different through cultural, historic, spiritual, regional or familial lines. Some are born Muslim, some are not.
You don't get to challenge us and this requires no input from you.
13) WE ๐๐พ DO ๐๐พ NOT ๐๐พ NEED ๐๐พ SAVING ๐๐พ.
So kindly get out of our way. And take Nick Kristoff and Megan McCain eith you. In fact, collect all the useless voices so we can be more impactful.
12) Always remember that the issues Muslim women face run the gamut from racism to misogyny, to homophobia.
The issues are complex and interwoven in ways only we can experience and survive.
11) FOR THE MUSLIM MEN: FOLLOW ALL STEPS 1 - 10 BECAUSE YOU ARE ALSO PART OF THE PROBLEM.
We don't need you to speak for us. Jazzak'Allah for the concern but maybe instead of silencing us, you can DEFER to us and instead go handle that parking mess in the masjid lot.
10) If a someone calls you doing a project or piece on Muslim women, ask them how they are qualified and what their angle is. Makes suggestions of Muslim women you know.
8) Don't speak for us because your best friend in grade 3 was Muslim and you loved their Mom and she fed you koftas.
9) There are enough Muslim women writers to cover STEM, food, culture, identity, nat sec, sports (YES, SPORTS) and fine arts. Amplify them.
6) Choose better photostock photos. Not every Muslim woman is Arab nor wears a hijab.
7) Don't be lazy and ignorant. They are a dreadful combination and we will find and drag you
4) Find one - or several - Muslim identifying women for something you ar writing or researching. WE ARE NOT A MONOLITH.
5) Pay us. HIRE US. Don't call up a Muslim women and say "I'm writing / producing XYZ on Muslim women. Can I pick your brain?"
(aka gimme free labour)
Here are tangible things you can do to support Muslim women:
1) Be quiet and listen.
2) Not talk about what we wear, or opine about what we choose to wear.
3) Support Muslim grassroots feminist organizations. They've been mobilizing since before you knew what shwarma was.
