The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has reprimanded eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba after video emerged of him telling activist Yeshelen Govender, a South African of Indian descent, “I’m talking with the Africans. I’m not talking to you” during a 16 June 2026 oversight visit at Sherwood Park, Durban. The remarks drew criticism from community leaders and analysts who called them divisive.

On Monday 22 June, ANC KZN leaders mediated a meeting between Xaba and Govender. Both expressed regret and resolved the matter. The provincial party reiterated that all citizens belong by birth and constitutional right, regardless of race.

The incident also prompted an SA Human Rights Commission complaint by MK Party MP Visvin Reddy, citing violations of equality and dignity. Xaba’s office said his comments targeted disorderly conduct and that he makes no distinction between South Africans based on race or faith.
