Lover of early 20th century design and mastering traditional and modern techniques of making things. Raising a little apprentice to love working with his hands
Sometimes the most fulfilling #furnituremaking projects are the simplest. Bought this @tamaradelempicka1898 reproduction painting for my wife for Christmas. Made her the frame for #valentinesgift Made it out of ebonize maple, with a simple #artdeco s… https://t.co/j6dJHieYdc
@homedepot lost my business today. To save on labor costs they’re increasingly pressuring customers to do “self checkout”. Today was the first time I couldn’t get anyone to check me out. They don’t pay me to be one of their cashiers. They also are ta… https://t.co/5XGD06nXmH
#Eureka! Been wracking my brain for weeks on how to cut patterns so they will fit onto a curved surface to where the edges will still meet perfectly...like the front of this chest or projecting a map on a sphere to make a globe. Just hit upon the metho… https://t.co/OYlyi0Y4dF
Here is my homework for tonight learning #rhino3d...a #CAD package for #digitaldesign and rendering. Have decided to apply myself to learning this tool or else my design skills just aren’t going to progress. Sometimes putting in the time to attain mast… https://t.co/Mdjw69ucpF
My #dad inspires me still, even though he passed 18 years ago. In 1939 he showed up at #Savannah#Shipyard looking for work. He claimed experience to get the job but on the first day he picked up the #welder and asked a buddy “so how do I work this?” En… https://t.co/e5clPEIttn
Why are so many woodworkers allergic to doing #upholstry? Made this @greeneandgreene style stool 2 years ago at @northwestwoodworking studio and just this weekend decided it was a good place to start learning. #woodshop#woodworking#furnituremaker#fu… https://t.co/sDXJR3aBf7
Made a brass #handplane in class at the @northwestwoodworking studio yesterday. Guess which one? 😬 Not really into #toolmaking but sometimes when you need a specialized tool for a project, you need to know how to make your own.

Starting to look like parts of a chair rather than just a stack of walnut. But thinking through all the compound angles on this #midcenturymodern#chair is starting to make my head hurt. Time to pack it in for the evening.

Introducing #woodworking to friends is the best. My friend Dave came by yesterday with a desktop he wanted to refinish, and we nearly ruined with my drum sander as it had flatness issues the machine didn’t like. Out came the #handtools to the rescue. … https://t.co/HdqEIHMYKD
Learning upholstery this term, so thinking a lot about #fabric lately. My own set of dining chairs are covered in this #artdeco vintage fabric by #prelle, a French #textile manufacture that made this pattern 80 years ago. Might begin my journey by reco… https://t.co/K2rAoe2CiM
My GOSH this new dust collector sucks...in a good way. About 50% better than my old Jet model but no noisier thanks to better construction and sound baffling. Took me 10hrs or so to assemble but my lungs will be happier for it. .

Galuchat (I.e. ray skin) was used extensively in #artdeco#furnituremaking for its beautiful texture and durability. One goal for this year is to learn how to work it. Unfortunately it’s a bit of a lost art and all the books are in French. Time to bre… https://t.co/rAWX2rPeQY
With my recently released #halltable design, have tried to merge traditional luxury details with #midcenturymodern design. Figured maple drawers lined in #shagreen leather. Recessed African Blackwood handles that are smooth and pleasant to the touch. … https://t.co/w3ssIbezYv
Arm detail from a side chair built by #midcenturymodern#furnituremaker Sam Maloof. What he called a “hard line” referred to a sharp, distinct edge where two curved surfaces meet. You see it now in a staggering amount of #contemporaryfurniture design.… https://t.co/gGKPeJyyym
Machine rehab weekend in the shop. In the foreground is a fantastic industrial #mortiser I bought used whose head won’t raise and lower. In the background is a #CNC I almost finished setting up yesterday. Good activities to start the year off right. … https://t.co/yU6OHM3HzW
