@daphnetchia @ImperialSandC ..we have in fact published several papers where we used fNIRs to measure cognitive workload and distractibility in surgeons in theatre !

@daphnetchia @ImperialSandC Stress is a very complex phenomenon as it can be defined in a multitude of ways - subjective scores, objective physiology, cognitive resources etc (I think an entire chapter in my PhD was dedicated to defining stress!!)

@daphnetchia @ImperialSandC and you're quite right... alot of the principles of surgical expertise acquisition are derived from the sports literature - mental imagery, deliberate practice, etc

@daphnetchia @ImperialSandC Thanks Daphne, in theory yes I would expect to see similar changes in brain function because an experienced surgeon would be a 'novice' in a difficult task so I might anticipate their brain behaviour to be similar to that of a trainee surgeon rehearsing a simpler task
