Why the interest. I listened again tonight to the last three books of The Odyssey (and though compressed in time compared to the Lord of the Rings) how after righting the scouring of his home and the battle to regain it, such tender simplicity accompanies his eventual reunion with home and family.

The idea of nostos echoed in the Lord of the Rings, the great catholic work in its revision, nearly three thousand years after Homer’s Odyssey, both masterpieces emphasising the entire reason we carry on through adversity: that nothing can be resolved no journey complete until home is restored. Some human ideas transcend all ages.
