✏️✏️✏️Recently I had a very unique conversation with one of my classmates. We have been studying together since the very first semester. We took many of the same subjects and often sat in the same classroom. Yet somehow, I never spoke with him much about personal matters. The pace of student life keeps getting faster, responsibilities keep increasing, and to be honest, I am not a very social person. So against all odds this conversion happened.
During our conversation I asked him, “How many children do you have?”
He replied, “Twelve.”
I was shocked and said, “How is that even possible? You are still young!”
He smiled and told me his story. After he got married, he had two children of his own. Later, his brother passed away, leaving behind five children, and he took them in. Also his sister’s husband died, leaving four children, and he took them as well. I counted and said, “2 + 5 + 4 makes 11. Where is the 12th?”
He said there was a woman who had committed adultery and gave birth to a child. Years later she got married, but her new husband hated that child and would beat him severely. So she brought the child and left him with my classmate, begging him to care for him.
That was years ago. When the boy came to live in his home, my classmate asked him a few days later, “What would you like?” The boy answered, “I want you to be my father.”
Today that boy has grown up and has memorized the entire Quran. My classmate raised him like one of his own children.
This story amazed me. So I asked, “How do you support such a large family while being a student, monthly allowance is only 840 SAR?”
He said out of that amount, he sends 800 riyals to his family every month so that they can pay rent and buy food. I was surprised and asked, “How do you survive on only 40 riyals?”
He explained that he buys twenty dinners from the university canteen (the university offers subsidized meals for students: dinner for 2 riyals). I said, “But twenty dinners cover only twenty days, and a month has thirty.” He replied, “I often fast every other day for long periods. Sometimes for months. I simply have no other choice because I must feed my family.”
I was truly moved. Never in my life had I seen someone so determined to continue his studies in the Islamic University despite so many hardships. If someone else had told me this story, I might not have believed it. But I knew this person personally. In his country he is already active in giving lessons and traveling between mosques to teach people about Islam.
Then I asked how his family views his studies. He mentioned his wife patiently raises the children despite his absence for nine or ten months every year. His mother always supports him and tells him, “Your name is Ibrahim. You must live up to that name, just like Prophet Ibrahim عيه السلام who left his family in the deserts of Makkah for the sake of Allah, you leave your family for studies in Madinah for the sake of Allah”. Whenever life becomes difficult, his mother reminds him, “You will rest after death”...
This year, both of us are graduating with a bachelor’s degree, and that made me think. I know that many capable students from African countries, after returning home, have to work in the fields or fish to survive. They often do not have the opportunity to do their dawah. So I thought, why not create a mini project where people can sponsor such students so that they can dedicate their lives to teaching in mosques and calling others to Islam?
The project would be organized carefully, with clear supervision and accountability, so that only truly committed students would take part. And without doubt, the very first person worthy of such support would be this brother, the one I have studied with for almost four years. I can tell the financial side at times gets hard for him, but he simply continues through it.
If I decide to move forward with this project, I will announce it inshaAllah.
