Syrians never supported or approved Assad’s intervention in Lebanon, nor did they support the atrocities committed by his forces there over the years. However, everyone understood that no one had any influence over Assad’s decisions at the time.
Today, the situation is completely different. The current leadership cannot afford to make a decision as significant as intervening in Lebanon without carefully considering its consequences. One of the most important factors would be public opposition to such a move.
Syrians do not want any intervention in Lebanon. The Syrian army is not in a position to undertake such an intervention, and, above all, the current leadership has no desire to do so, regardless of the rumors and speculation circulating.
The bottom line is that there will be no Syrian intervention in Lebanon. Lebanon’s internal challenges are for the Lebanese people to address and resolve themselves.
